ENGINE TEST STAND
The ultimate in engine test stands that got my attention was the Flat bed semitrailer at Dow Field for test running the 3500 HP R-4360 P&W Engines used on the Boeing KC-97G Refueling Tankers.
I do not have a photo, but the complete engine in its Nacelle was mounted on this trailer which had a control booth that reminded me of a telephone booth. The propeller was around 16' in diameter. The engine would be tested by an Airman Mechanic who had all the necessary controls and gages to analize engine performance. The trailer was anchored, but I could vision it creeping a bit. I would have loved to had that job.
Anyone have a pic?

Re: ENGINE TEST STAND
I saw an R-4360 on a stand at Oshkosh several years ago.
No Nacelle.
Awesome !!
I may have pictures, but if I do, they are 35mm and in a box. someplace.
I will look.

Re: ENGINE TEST STAND
Going to say B-29, the R$-4360 features do not appear present.
Nice Photo.

Re: ENGINE TEST STAND
Considering the fact that there is a shoe repair trailer among others listed in TM9-2800 this should be in a manual somewhere. It's possible it dates from post 1947. It's not in any manual I have.

Re: ENGINE TEST STAND
Wow, talk about impressive to see such a large and powerful engine mounted on the back of a truck!

Re: ENGINE TEST STAND
Awesome !!
Was the truck anchored to a D9 with the blade set ??
With brakes set, on run up, that thing would drag the truck all over the tarmac.
There use to be a test stand for a 9 cyl. engine, that was mounted on a 2 wheel trailer, at the local airport.
Half pint version of this and no cab.
The airport sold and I don't know what happened to it.

Re: ENGINE TEST STAND
Wolfman: That's a production prop installed on the engine on the test stand. For test purposes, a special built prop would be used. Blades are shorter and the pitch limitations are much different. The test prop would allow the engine to make maximum rated power on the stand, while a production prop would not. A test prop will not produce the thrust a production prop would, but the stand will still need anchoring or braking.

Re: ENGINE TEST STAND
Yes, There was one of the test props at a airport as well.
It was a wood, fixed pitch prop with four, short, fat blades.
Don't know where it went either.
Disappeared when the new owner moved in.
The old airport was a great place to be. A lot of activity.
The new ?? Never anyone around. Just someplace to store your airplane.
