Old video of Reno Nat. Champ. Air Races.

Post by D.R.H. » Tue Dec 31, 2013 8:41 pm

There is a hill at Stead Feild where pylon #5 is located. The Unlimited Class aircraft will get so close to the ground, thier altitude can be measured in tens of yards. I found this video, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xX7GdINzRus that shows the good ole days when the general public was still allowed to park on B.L.M. owned property and enjoy the show.
The area is off limits now, except for race officials.
Boy, it sure would have been a blast to be that close to the aircraft as they scream past. The recording is probably on video tape, but it is still has pretty good sound for when it was taken.
Enjoy!!!

I spent a few years back there and they were the best. Lefty and his P 38 was always the lowest to go by. I remember seeing a couple guys jump off the top of there van just before he got there. Sitting in the stands after the back side was closed off was never the same.

We had the Air Races her at New Century Air Center, the Old olathe NAS in the mid 1980's. It was an Outstanding event! I had my M3A1 Scout Car along with the other HMV's of the Kansas City "Hell On Wheels" Chapter of the then MVCC i think for the entire several days of the race. Man, it was awesome watching thos Warbirds hauling the mail. The modified F4U Corsair remained for a few days and would fly often. Man I was stoked! 8)

I was on Lefty`s crew for years and had to do more than one repair on the wingtips and the gear doors due to low altitude damage. The stories I could tell about Lefty, Howard and the rest of those guys.
