Sherman update (19MAY18) and she's running
The inside of the Sherman was in bad shape so all of the sheet metal was pulled. My guys have been welding all the rockets holes and one side is cleaned up while the other needs the finish grinding. The basket and all of what I will assume to be shell holders and power boxes were in bad shape so my guys pulled everything. Tomorrow it all goes to the scrap yard and we will making plans to pull the turret and get everything sandblasted.

Re: Gutted the Sherman today (another pic)
We found these inside the Sherman yesterday. I am assuming these were for a fire suppression system.

Re: Gutted the Sherman today (another pic)
I pulled all the Sherman metal before the guys took it down for scrap. We have to PMCS a whole fleet of vehicles every day of the week and don't have time to separate or pull parts and load them onto a pellet. Anybody live close to Vegas?

Here is what I presume is the final drive. There are no rocket holes in the final drive but you can clearly see some sort of braking mechanism bar that was severed on the left side. The other portion is still attached. I am hoping to keep the final drive in the vehicle and just replace all of the suspension. Unfortunately, the right and left sprockets have been damaged beyond repair so I will need new ones as well.

Re: Gutted the Sherman today (new pics 19APR15)
That big thing going across the front is called the controlled differential. It operates like the differential on a car, except that it has brake bands that slow down one side, and transfer power to the other, allowing the vehicle to steer. The final drives are on the outward ends of the differential, onto which the sprockets bolt. The final drive is a reduction gear system which convert sthe high speed rotation of the final drive into a slower speed that will drive the tracks without throwing them off. Its probably a 4 to 1 reduction?
I'm not as familiar with the Sherman, but I believe that the rod and lever that are busted off control the diffential's brake bands. It will need to be repaired, and properly, or else there will be some issues down the road.
Is the whole front end (transmission, differential) filled with water or not?

The front end is actually intact. We checked the dipstick that is on the right side of it and still had some residual oil in i, no rust.nirvana wrote:That big thing going across the front is called the controlled differential. Re: Gutted the Sherman today (new pics 06MAY15)
These pics are from last week when the suspension was removed. My guys have started scaling the heavy rust inside the hull to make the job easier for the sandblaster that will do everything where it's at. The sandblaster will build a "tent" around the entire tank and do his thing.
Also, my guys built a rolling cradle to hold the turret when it gets pulled.

Yea, you certainly are in Vegas. That is rocket damage for sure. At least it wasn't high explosive, or large caliber solid shot, that would've warped the hell. Most of those look like easy to repair holes.
Two things are notable to me about this tank.
The added armor on the right side, at the front, isn't the standard pattern that is commonly seen. It makes me wonder where it was applied, and when. They are usually smaller rectangle pieces, like this:
There also looks to be little metal nubs on the two hull hatches. I can tell if its a photo illusion, and it really just spall damage, or if its something else. My thoughts go to a modification that was done in the pacific theater, where tanks had metal spikes welded onto the tops of their hatches, to limit some types of attacks by the Japanese. If the spikes were cut off, they would look like what you have there. I hate to use a model to illustrate this, but its the best photo I could find on google. Do the upper hatches have these same metal nubs on them? Would it be possible to get better pictures?
