WTB: Looking for a couple of CLINCH nuts

Post by Michael O. » Mon Mar 19, 2018 8:06 pm

I’m looking for a couple of the CLINCHnuts...one the type that are on the firewall for the air cleaner bracket mounting bolts and one for the accelerator pedal foot rest. I believe they are the same size? The tub off GPW 104111 is almost finished and these are just the last few thing I need! Thanks in advance!

EDIT: FYI the air cleaner mounting bracket and the accelerator foot rest clinch nuts are both 5/16 -24NF.

Jay, take off's would require someone to cut them out of a tub. I'd hate to butcher a tub that might otherwise be restored unless the tub is already destroyed. New or NOS would be preferred but I would consider take off's from a destroyed tub.

I placed an order for two 5/16 x 24 NF clinch nuts with Paolo but if anyone has any that I can get my hands on sooner I’ll buy them! I don’t want to hold up the tub too long waiting on these. Thanks in advance!

What I need is the CLINCH nut style, not captive nuts.

So the foot rest is this type "clinch" nut and NOT a captive? Apparently, mine fell out last time I had to remove the trans cover plate. All I've got is a small, smooth round hole in the sheet metal, so no foot rest currently.
Saw a discussion about the clinch here:
http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/fa ... ut-132313/

(Come to think about it, maybe that is a small, SQUARE hole under my cover plate. :?: May even be more than that one I'm missing. Couple of cover plate holes are camouflaged with small round OD painted magnets. Can't remember why, unless this is the reason...?
Sooo... if a source for these clinch nuts becomes available, can they be re-installed somehow in situ, or is this a tub-off type project?)

If you have a ‘42 - 43 Ford tub you’ll need the type of nut I have pictured. If you need to replace the one for the foot rest on the transmission hump (or any of the smaller ones for the transmission floor cover) then you’d probably have to remove the tub from the frame to do a proper repair. Here’s how they’re installed....

Thanks. Doesn't look like I'll be getting to that anytime soon. Good to know what the procedure is, though.

While these are swaged on the corners to hold them in place where the cover to access the T-84 is...installing them like that is impossible when the jeep is completely assembled, let alone stripped down without proper tools. If you are working on the tub by itself, you can cheat a little and weld them to the floor on the underside with the tub on end or upside down. You don't need much but two opposing welds should be enough. If you can't weld that fine a line, get someone who can do this for you.

PS....I'll never tell a soul!

Chuck and Joel...having the proper set of tools to clinch them is a must. This way, no cheating needed and it’s repaired to original factory specs! My smaller clinch nut kit came with the tool and the ones I had to have replaced turned out perfectly.
