Late skid plate for ‘45 MB
Gents,
I’m looking for a late war skid plate for a ‘45 MB to fit with the internal style e-brake. I know they’re somewhat hard to find. Wish someone was repopping them.
Thanks

Actually...depending on your restoration both may not be “acceptable”. What is your DoD? The skid plate in photo #7 was only used for about 4-5 months and are more rare than Slat Grill skid plates (trust me)! If you have an MB which was produced during the short changeover period then either plate may be correct.....but again, depends on your MB’s DoD.jaeger38 wrote: ↑Fri Dec 01, 2017 3:48 amPhoto #7 or #8 would be acceptable.

Your DoD will determine which skid plate you need and will assist you and others in identifying the proper skid plate for your MB.
I had this one for sale until yesterday: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=286812&p=1695415#p1695415

Re: Late skid plate for ‘45 MB
Did the two-piece plate get changed to the late style one-piece just because of the e-brake? I may be mistaken (I’m learning) but my understanding is that the smaller art of the two piece was related to the exhaust routing. So was the smaller part of the two-piece plate also no longer necessary due to moving the exhaust to deep mud style that ran to the back rather than the passenger side?

What is your DoD? Based on that date (or SN) I will be happy to inform you regarding which skid plate you need.

SN: 431217
Estimated DoD - Feb 45
So the correct plate should be the late war one piece type. However, I’d like to determine if a two-piece will work in a pinch.

Re: Late skid plate for ‘45 MB
You should have the internal parking brake drum installed. You need the late-war one piece skid plate with the indentation for the drum clearance. The two piece skid plate is a mid series skid plate used in conjunction with the external parking brake set up.
The skid plate you require should have the 5 circular holes running across the center. It was used from about Oct ‘44 to Feb or March 1945....making it one of the rarest of all MB skid plates.
Attached is a photo of one I found for my Oct ‘44 MB after years of searching. Note...the small cut out on the side is not factory and will be repaired.

Re: Late skid plate for ‘45 MB
Thinking about your DoD your MB was actually probably delivered in late March or early April 1945....meaning it was assembled possibly a week earlier. Since your MB seems to have been produced around the changeover time frame, I think it would be a very safe assumption that the very late style skid plate could be the most appropriate for your MB....it’s a bit more common and it’s a little easier to locate than the previous example I provided. From a judging standpoint, I certainly wouldn’t question the presence of this skid plate on an MB such as yours.
Presently, no one is reproducing either of these skid plates.
Pitty, I just sold a spare one I had...like the one in these photos:

Re: Late skid plate for ‘45 MB
My MB is 430923 and it’s DOD is 3/28/45. I have the original skid plate with the six holes. Since your MB is most likely an April DOD you need the six hole plate.
