MB Radiator Core

Post by Michael O. » Fri Nov 03, 2017 10:22 am

I just bought a radiator from another member that was suppose to be good but it turns out that it has a bad core and the radiator shop stated that the core cannot be repaired. They were wanting to charge me $575 to have it re-cored with a non-original style core. I remember reading of someone who was reproducing an excellent reproduction MB or GPW cores some years ago? Anyone remember who or where? For you guys who have had their radiators re-cored....what did you use? I must have an original looking core.

Did you speak with Lee at Brassworks Radiator restoration service in Paso Robles, CA for that quote?

No, it was Midwest Radiator in Omaha, NE.

Does that shop in CA use “original” style cores?

I spoke with Lee today. They have cores they can use but they also can make cores. They are well known for restoring radiators not repairing. This can be pricey, but if a vehicle is valuable enough it is worth it. When I spoke with him he said someone else asked about making MB radiators. As with all things he needs somebody to put up money before he can start stamping tanks. If someone had some poor shape original radiators it would be worth it. All the radiators from his shop have always been spot on.

What are the characteristics of an original MB radiator core?

As Far as I`ve noticed Mac it`s the amount of cooling tubes and how there placed
plus I`ve only come across two core rads which could possibly be early 2a
They have 58 tubes both back and front
But there`s a difference in tube spacing front all equal
But rear the first two side tubes are closer together then a space plus there are three tubes close together more in the middle.

Ford are totally different again it`s a three core rad but tubes are not so wide as MB ones
Also there`s a difference with front and back on GPW ones too.
Totally front tubes 38
total rear tubes 38 but formed with a "V" void in the center
See attached for more clarification top pic shows three row of tubes and "V" in GPW rad core
Second Pic side of MB rad showing two tubes close with space
Last pic shows three tubes close together in center of MB rad

Since tractor offered to help. Do you think there would be an interest in getting these produced? Cores and complete radiators.
He is not going to make these on a folly and it is hard to just say it would be great. Love to hear from everyone on this to gauge interest to show Lee

Lee,
I would think there would certainly be a demand and into the future too !!!
But might be slow moving.
Guess it really would come down to price ??
Just have to look at the demand for a slat grill air filter, who would have thought even repro ones of those are in demand !!!!
Has anyone bought one of the newer rad repro`s and seen how close the cores are to originals or even the top and lower tanks on those ?
The ones that sellers are asking around $475 for ??
I did hear a while back a rad core company in Texas where making jeep cores to supply rad shops but not GPW cores.

Sorry, Lee is the guy at Brassworks considering making radiators. I agree there is enough interest but we have to convince him. Can anyone get me info on the guy making those cores. Thanks
