Dipstick Disc thingy

looking for the oil dipstick disc thing that is often missing for my GPW,

Make your own, . pretty simple to do.
Mark out, allow 1/16" clearance for the diameter
Use a wood end grain to punch out the opening before cutting the circle ( Avoids distortion and is easier to handle)
Drill the holes
Cut the piece out
Bent the "Arm"
Solder to the stick
Follow the photos......
The Alasdair Brass photo is of my dipstick after I sent it to Al to be plated in New Zealand...

It's not rocket science, have a go..

Some are "floating" and are secured by swaging/pinching the dipstick above and below the baffle on each side. I suppose there is a slight chance yours has come off inside the tube and is setting at the bottom where it is fitted to the block...probably not, but worth checking especially if you have some slight resistance in getting the dipstick back down into the filler tube on occasion.

There are several different types of baffles....the photos by Jon Rogers are of the style that went on the bayonet style dip stick without the serrations on the side.

What type of oil dipstick do you have?

Is your dipstick F marked? I have a complete dipstick, rusty in the middle with the baffle attached. Its floating and pinched on. You could clean up the stick or put the baffel on an F marked one. Top of stick needs rivet tightened, its twist on with serrations around the top sides. $20 pl;us post. cont usa only.

Just to make things interesting....you will find oil filler tubes with and without an indentation...these are the twist on types. You can fit a non-indented filler tube with either dipstick, but....if you have an indented filler tube, the earlier dipstick has the baffle mounted too LOW so you can't fit the dipstick down all the way...this alone may account for why many dipsticks are missing the baffle...

The Baffle on the dipstick takes a lot of beatings during removal. It catches on the inner lip at the top of the fill pipe if caution is not taken.

Also, I believe that GPW sticks had a flat disk that was held in place by distorting the stick; MB was welded to the stick with a tang as pictured above.
