Followed me home, think it's an A5

Post by timsresort » Tue Jul 04, 2017 6:34 pm

Hi all, just got this mule with no data plate. Aluminum bed, 2 wheel steer, but has cover in bed for steering selection. I'm thinking A5. Any other indications I could look for? Also, while installing fuel pump today noticed that the light blue paint is everywhere, even under motor accessories. Was the PO just meticulous, or did this color exist for another reason known to anyone?

Your mule looks to be an A5

Were are the Rails? The bed looks good and straight and the engine has the governor cover not often seen. The engine guard appears to be in great shape.

Check the paint on the underside of the engine cover that may be the correct color.

Contact me via e-mail or PM I have original AC fuel pump rebuild kits or rebuilt fuel pumps.

You have an A5. I think you are confused, there is no steering changeover access cover on your deck, it would be a square hole to the right of the driver's seat, as seen here:
Image

The round cover in the center of the deck is for access to the under-bed weapons mounting point and is found on all mule models.
Image

Be sure to remove the engine center shroud and check for rat's nests on top of the left cylinder.
Image

I think somebody just went crazy with the blue paint. Any indication of the registration numbers on the side under the blue paint? If you can find them, I might be able to provide the serial number.

There were no rails, darn. Probably the most glaring problem. Any idea where to get them? And I am very happy with the overall straightness, just some bonus holes in the deck. Under side of the engine cover is OD, so I guess PO painted the blue.

Thanks for straightening me on the deck cover. As soon as I read it, I knew that. I was just going too fast. I will check for reg. number under the paint, thanks. BTW, after installing fuel pump, got it to pop after work today, throttle and gov. linkage was stuck. Carb went from no fuel to flooding, maybe stuck float?

The carbs are pretty weak, I usually replace the carb whenever I replace the fuel pump. There are no rebuild kits for the carbs.

Based on that 325326 registration number, your mule is an M274A5, built by Baifield Industries - Emtex Division, in June, 1968 under contract DA-20-113-AMC-07129(T). Serial number should be 11032. John Emery will have the exact replacement data plate and drive rivets. Your mule would have been painted 34052 Semi-gloss Forest Green as built. John also makes a very nice exact reproduction bed rail set if you don't have your originals. Correct canvas seat cushions are available from WeeBee Webbing: http://www.odcloth.com/products.html

Very nice. I have always been partial to the 3B's, especially the Navy jeeps. My dad had a Navy 3B that now resides in a large private collection in Reno. My '53 was bone stock and worn out, so it was a candidate for a V6, 1 ton axle, and 37" tires, as I'm right here on the edge of the Rubicon Trail and I need something to get me through 2-3 times a year.

Hi Tim, love the photos of your new mule and your other toys. How much did you modify your M416 trailer, and how much does pulling the trailer affect your off roading on that rough trail?

I ran the trailer in stock form for years, except for flipping the axle under the springs. I actually got pretty fast at the annual spring flip. Then a few years ago i got away from the 7.00-16's, (kept rubbing fenders on rocks), and put 35-12.50's on it with a newly built axle that uses jeep hubs and spindles like a M100. It does great, it's nice to not have to cram very few luxuries in the Jeep. I have flopped it on its lid once going off an off camber step, but there was little damage and it was actually good for a laugh, and didn't break a single egg. You definitely know it's there, but I think the Jeep does better not being overloaded, and once the Jeep gets over the obstacle, the trailer has to follow.

Thanks for the reply, do you use the stock pintle hitch, or something different?
