M8 Greyhound

Post by dgrev » Mon Oct 28, 2013 4:52 am

Hello

Sorry for English, but I do not speak Italian.

Is anyone able to tell me the history of the Italian M8 Greyhound Armoured Cars?

Did they come from US or British compounds within Italy or were they brought
in from Western Europe compounds in Germany?

I know that many were rebuilt by "Caserta Fiori" south of Rome.

I have been told that the last ones were used by some sort of Police rather than the
army?

Thanks
Doug

hi Doug!

thank you for your question left here on this italian forum... you're very welcome!

... I'm sure that some of the oldest pasionates will be able to give their answers.

ciao!
maurizio

Saluti
Doug

Roberto

Thanks for your reply.

I am translating this into Italian using Google Translate, so apologies if the Italian language is not clear.

My greyhound had a sticker on the rear wheel guards: a "flamming bomb" symbol above a 5 digit number. I took a photo, but this got lost, so I have to describe from memory.
In the English world this symbol would mean "artillery". Do you remember seeing it on your Greyhounds?
Do you remember what markings they had?

Regards
Doug

Hi Doug,
how you describe the sticker on the rear fender, it could be in service at a Mechanized Police Battalion, as Battaglione Carabinieri Meccanizzato.
Here are some examples of STANAG that should resemble the sticker on your mind:

The flaming bomb is the distinctive frieze of the Carabinieri

Massimo

Yes! That is it. The one with the Pegasus on a tank with the flamming bomb.

Can you send me a link please where I could download a higher resolution of those images?

Do you know what other markings were on the vehicles?

Also any history of what the vehicles were used for and during what time periods.

Regards and many thanks!!!
Doug

Hi Doug,

really hard to find pics while still in use in Italy, and suggests that some remained in service with the battalions until the seventies!

Massimo

Did they definitely have the bridge weight plate/stencil on the front, or is that a guess?

from the few pictures available is frequently present.
In the most modern armored cars that have replaced the M8, it's standard.
