Here`s a photo of my "Early" housing. Date 9/23. "pattern" still visible, but not as "good" as the one posted by Todd. Seems like the Mold have worn a little before this one was made

todd, with a fiberglass mold you put the fiberglass on the mold, so with a steel mold i was thinking they made a cast like when you have a mold for say...lead...you would pour in the liquid stel and it would cool and you would open the cast and viola, there you have it..but now i see that it doesnt work that way with this foundry thing, thanks for the link

Hey guys...I have been looking at the picts of the early bellhousings, so I took a little look at some of my parts, and I think this is an early slatgrill housing. There is no raised flat or tapped hole, also it has what appears to be a casting plug like Frank's. It has an inside casting date of 12-18..

Hi Guys,
thanks for the interesting discussion.
I have a doubt regarding the part number.
In the bell housing posted first, the part number is A-438, but in the part list TM-10-1206 bell housing part is A-439 !!
Wich is the difference between 438 and 439 ???
Any idea when the change occured ??
Another question : the bell housing for a late slat grill must have the hole for the brake hand cable clip or not ??
Cheers and tks for your answers.

A-439 is the assembly part number. It consists of 3 parts:
1) A-438 Transmission Bell Housing
2) 639734 Starting Motor Bushing
3) 51921 Plug - Expansion 3/4 Dia.
A-438 is the part number for just the bare bell housing.

Re: Early Bell Housing
Bringing this post back to life.
Just got what appears to be an early slat grill bellhousing. Casting date is 9 17. What does this indicate? Cast Sept 17? What year? 1941 or 1942?
The reason I ask is because I got this bellhousing and engine block (serial number 441-56401, block casting 638632) from the same man, and he said they came together. The bellhousing is attached to a T-90 and postwar T-18 transfer case, but supposedly came from that engine. Obviously the T-90 isn't original to the engine, but it looks possible that the bellhousing may be original to the engine. Engine is seizd up but bottom part is well-oiled and looks good. May just have to free the pistons.
Planned to rebuild the engine and mate with a T-84 that I have sitting around, just to have a spare set-up. Seems it (they?) should go on a jeep earlier than the Dec '42 GPW that I would ultimately put it in.
Any thoughts on this engine and bellhousing? Some on the MB Technical page thought it came from an Americar or early Slat. Sorry if I've rambled...

Re: Early Bell Housing
Chuck,
It has a boss and 1/4-28 tapped hole. This is a mounting location for the e-brake cable, right? I think I'm at the right location...

Re: Early Bell Housing
So it is the third and last type of the A-348 bellhousings and too late for the Slats...perhaps someone has the change dates for these?

Re: Early Bell Housing
So the boss with tapped hole is one variation. What others are there? I'd hate to see something at a swap meet and not know what I'm looking for/at.
Thanks for the help Chuck.

Re: Early Bell Housing
Just took down my bell housing and thought I'd share some pictures. Dated 8-18 but am unsure of the year. I have a 1943 MB.

Re: Early Bell Housing
Hi Chance, If you look in your first photo, you will see a raised boss and a small aprox. 3/16" hole where the speedo cable is usually bolted. That is common after the ones that are being discussed in this thread. The ones they were talking about were from early slat grill jeeps and don't have the boss or the hole.
