Early Bell Housing
I have noticed on some of the early MB that they used a mold that appears to be a patched passenger car mold. Does anyone else have one like this? The one I have is dated 11-14.
I would love to know how long they used this mold. If you have one, can you post the casting date? Thanks.

Hi Todd,
The bell housing on my slat 101948 is exactly like yours with the "patch".
If I remember right the casting date was 11 41. Most all dated parts on mine are in Nov 41 being a DOD of 12-4-41
Thanks
Larry Loyd

Hi Larry. Do you have your bell housing loose or is it on the jeep right now? I was wondering if you could take some close-ups of the patch. I want to see if it looks like it has the same mold as the one I have. Also, yours may have been 11-14 as well. They typically used month and day. So I don't think the "41" is correct.

I've got one dated 3-23 so they must have made it through the end of the slatgrill run and beyond.

But that could mean it was cast 3-23-41 instead.GI jeeps wrote:I've got one dated 3-23 so they must have made it through the end of the slatgrill run and beyond.
I never noticed this little detail before. turns out mine looks like that.

Thanks Chris. It looks like yours had the same mold. Notice the 2 "bumps" that look like screw heads ground down in the mold (the lower one is more pronounced).

slat bell housing
Hi Todd,
My bell housing is already installed so I can't get a picture. I am relying on my memory on the casting date. It probably was 11-14 instead of 11-41.
Thanks
Larry Loyd

any ideas on what they used for the patch on the molds? its interesting to note the texture on the inside of todd's bell, almost looks like a bondo patch that someone didnt spend much time on.
Chris, does yours have the same strange looking patch job on the inside? what could they have used to patch the molds that would handle the temperature and yet look like that?
the more i look at it, it looks like maybe spot welds..you see the lumps on the top of the patch in todd's photo..also on the left side

I don't think the mold would have any heat. It would just have to be pressed into sand. The spots look like ground down screw heads, not spot welds.

todd, not the outside..the inside...so if it didnt need to be heat resistant, than it could very well have been bondo or the equivilent eh?

Hmmm. I don't see spot welds on the inside. But inside or outside, the thing that is making the mold casting doesn't take any heat.

Not sure I understand. Here is an article on how the Wilson Foundry made castings. It was written a few years before the jeep, but the same concept applies.
