Re: Rear Prop Shaft - Fat or Skinny - Please check your Number
Due to the photos posted by "Ironage" (Graham in UK) I wonder if this is much simpler than it seems....I don't have an Internal Expanding Ebrake setup to measure, but I think they are SHORTER than the earlier one....and therefore a LONGER propshaft in the rear is needed. So here is a theory you guys can sort out since I don't have any Fat Tube propshafts or a late MB ebrake setup..
1) First came the FAT TUBE shaft for the EARLY MBs.
2) Next came the SOLID shaft.
3) With the intro of the late ebrake setup, a DIFFERENT LENGTH Fat Tube type was produced.
You would have to remove the Yoke from the Shaft and measure from u-joint end to spline end and then compare against the standard rear shaft dimensions....and if you had BOTH ebrake setups you could measure those....and measure the Yoke that mounts on that ebrake!
Anyone want to see if this is why there are FAT tubes early and FAT tubes late and why SOME fat tubes stick too far into the yoke when mounted behind an EARLY ebrake setup?

Re: Rear Prop Shaft - Fat or Skinny - Please check your Number
Holy crap is this debate still going on?????
Ford made their own driveshafts and used the same skinny ones throughout production. Fat rear ones are Willys only.
I'm pretty sure all slat grill MB's used the skiny rear shaft and have factory photo's showing this, the change to the fat one occured around may/june 42. I have a factory photo of Mb 147??? DOD 6-7-42 showing a fat shaft.

Re: Rear Prop Shaft - Fat or Skinny - Please check your Numb
Thanks guys. This is a great post.
Although I am usually skeptical on surveys made today to determine the changes in production between 1941 and 1945, there does seem to be a pattern emerging.
Does anyone out there know which one of these 2 fat props is the correct one for the jeep ?
By the way my MB130607 has a thin prop, but this jeep came back from Greece in the 1980's, so I really would not like to say that it's original to the jeep.
