Hi Cogenhoe, welcome to the site, my bumper wood is OD, but on my other jeep it was varnished. Also i have seen jeeps with plain untreated wood, so i think its a matter of preferance. :D

Jerry
As I understand it the Us military directive was to leave all timber left unpainted. Be it for spade ,axe, tent poles cot frames ect ect. The reason being they believed cracks?splits would have been noticed easier. NOW in practice who can say for sure. Thousands of wartime pictures will show you either painted or unpainted wood. So I think that quite likely in service The US followed the British military belief/saying " that if it moved you could place a bet/wager on it. If it didn't move you bloody well painted it"   So Jerry your choice mate :) No one can tell you your wrong.

A little raw Linseed Oil will help preserve the wood.
My NOS is made from Poplar, the raw linseed oil did not affect the color. Been on my MB 40+ years.

Hard to tell here because of the lighting. Maybe installed natural and sprayed in the back?

I agree with Farrell on this one Joel.

A-1147 Front Bumper Bar Wood Filler is listed in all the SNL and listed in the BOM... the Contract radio jeep BOMs use the same part number.

If they were different part numbers I would say OD and forest green but it is the same part number... hence plain wood. As noted above they painted it sometime during assembly.

So, unpainted in the box as a part, painted on the assembly line.

Andy, I remember seeing the frame and drive train being painted at WO factory but cannot seem to find that photo?

Maybe a drawing of A-1147 would give the finish.

Intentionally painted, or overspray?

According to Ordnance Substitute Drawing D7698454 for WO-A-1147, GPW-17751:

"Filler to be oak, yellow birch or maple treated with approved wood preservative & sealer by dipping for 5 minutes. 5% Pentachlorophenol M-3845 or 1/2% of Phenyl Mercuric Oleate M-3854 by weight."

The drawing does not list the filler as being painted but I don't see it taped off and it really does not matter as it is painted.

I do wonder though how you have a filler made out of the wrong wood and no preservative & sealer?

We've gone thru this before about how I came by the NOS MB bumper filler. It was identified by friend Maynard Page, a dealer in specialty lumber. During WWII Mr. Page was employed by the Gov't to cruise the forests of Maine and Canada selecting timber for use during WWII, he was responsible for wood selected for use on the Mosquito aircraft plus whatever else the Gov't required. I also showed it to a local millwork shop which also identified it as Poplar. As far as it being untreated, I doubt anyone can prove that it was without taking core samples, I usually give wood used on my M'V's the Raw Linseed Oil treatment. We can recite fancy chemicals all we want and I doubt Jeep restorers will ever use them. One of my former responsibilities was selecting wood suitable for being used to detect ocean wood borers that attacked wood used in bridge and dock construction.
Why my bumper filler is made out of poplar is anybody's guess, it sure looks good tho and will remain in it's place of honor up front on my MB.
