Thanks

One point guys, when they lightened up a jeep to go into the gliders (D-Day), was the bumper wood removed ?

This is pure speculation on my part. But if I was the guy with the paint gun on the assembly line and my job was to touch up the areas that weren't
green already I probably would have given that bare wood a quick coat of paint.

Anyone dare to bet that painting rifle stocks O.D. could somehow be justified?

Well, I'll be dipped!!
Regardless whether we get a definitive answer, this is creating some excellent WWII official Jeep photos.
Thank you Farrell.

By "painted O.D. at the factory", do you mean it was painted during the "touch up" process?
My NOS Willys packaged filler was bare wood and is made of poplar, a mystery, but not the greatest MB mystery.
(I discarded the box when I installed the filler in the mid 70's.)

Not sure about, I also have doubts about interpreting wood bumper fillers in black and white Jeep photos being painted OD. The Willys drawing for the MB Bumper Filler should note whether or not they are painted. Why my filler is poplar? Who knows, perhaps there is a provision in the specs for wood used in the production of MB's such as Hat Channels, Fender Brace filler and such.

There are WWII military spec books on correct wood for wooden cargo body components that do not agree with the piano grade wood that restorers wood use. This was war time and the Chief of Ordnance had a lot of discretion when it came to alternates. Anyone know the actual purpose or intent of the wood bumper filler on their Jeep? Did other MV's use one?
