MB Split Back Seats
What’s the changeover date from the early style split back seats to the non-split back seats used in MB production?

Re: MB Split Back Seats
So, the split back seats were used until early 1944? Very interesting. I’m wondering what makes a Slat Grill seat, well, “Slat Grill”? Were there any production differences between early MB seats and mid series MB seats?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: MB Split Back Seats
Yes, the small vs. large fuel filler hole....but the small mouth fuel tank was used well after “Slat Grill” series production ceased. I should be more clear I guess....are there any differences in MB seats used in a Dec ‘41 MB and those found in a July ‘42 MB?

Jay, I think MB’s had the cast foot an loops well into ‘43....possibly much later? That’s another thing I need to check. I only have one of my MB books with me on my current trip but will thumb through it.

Re: MB Split Back Seats
What are the chance of Willys changing to "slightly" modified split-back seats at the exact time they switched from the slat to a stamped grill? I'll take a look at my early MB seats and see if there are differences.

Re: MB Split Back Seats
Michael, In reference to Lucs Comment above. The really early Slat Grills (not sure of cutoff, but I think certainly Dec 41) had a round hole for the fuel sender, and the round hole was cut off center with a saw or drill because the original stamped hole was not lined up correctly. I purchased a seat from a 2000 number MB and it had this, as well as some of the other early MB guys and we in the discussion surmised it to be a factory mod. See if you can find the thread.

Thanks Brian! How was your Christmas? It’s just this information that yourself and Luc provided that answers my questions. I haven’t checked the driver seat from MB 111414 yet but will report back on my findings. I do remember that the seat that was in it was an unmodified small mouth split back.

Re: MB Split Back Seats
MB 111414 has the squared fuel sender hole....which is correct for an MB in this SN range. I was secretly hoping it has the round sense hole though....

Re: MB Split Back Seats
For whatever it's worth, #100161 appears to have what was a round hole that's been enlarged. The "enlargement" is sort of square, I had to look closely to see which was original. Be aware, though, this jeep came to me with a CJ tank sitting on a plate over the fuel tank well. The CJ fill neck had been moved from the side to the top in the vicinity of the MB fill, but they missed, so they enlarged (very crudely, I might add) the access hole in the seat as well. BW

Re: MB Split Back Seats
I can’t say the seat is original but mb 101173 has a split back seat but the square sender hole. The fuel fill has been enlarged. But came to me with the correct fuel tank.

Re: MB Split Back Seats
From my observations the small round hole corresponds to the early slatgrill that had the rear brake bkt mounted to the chassis side rail.
