top air deflector attachment hardware question
Hello,
Could you please help me with this: I noticed on my jan 7th 1942 slat grill (body 9442) that it has 6 peculiar flat head screws that hold the hood air deflector (see picture): they seem original and almost impossible to detach. The hood seems original to the jeep (TR20 bolts on the catches, deflector with horsehair with staples and securing strip – all the bolts look like they have never come off). I attached some images..
However....most of the wartime pictures I could find seem to point to round head screws, not flat, as also mentioned in the sources that I at least could access:
TM10-1206 (feb 1942), it says on page 29:
51492 26483-S screw 1/4’’-20 x 1/2’’ (top air deflector to hood) – qty 6.
and on page 83 that 51492 is a round head screw.
Also an earlier post by Mark Tombleson tells that the 11-5-42 manual is also listing the ‘WO-51492 Screw – Mach. Rd. Hd., 1/4-20x1/2, quantity 6‘ as the appropriate screw for the top air deflector.
Questions – have you seen this type of flat head screw before? Could this be an early versus late slat thing?
is there an earlier parts manual than the Feb 1942 version and does anybody know what is mentioned there about these screws?
thanks very much,
Chris Kochheim

Re: top air deflector attachment hardware question
I have the round head screws, and as far as I can see the deflector was never separated from the hood, not even during restoration. Hood is original to body #13772, MB II0247, d.o.d. January 8, 1942. Also located in The Netherlands
Could it be you have round head screws too that someone ground flat for some reason?

Re: top air deflector attachment hardware question
Hi David,
thanks for your post . No, it seems very unlikely that somebody was grinding them flat: they are all exactly identical and have also some kind of dimple in the screw's head. Length of the screw and thread seem also precisely ok.
best regards,
Chris

Re: top air deflector attachment hardware question
My 45 had screws holding the lube chart that looked exactly like that. Was determined that the hood had been sanded with screws in place leaving them to look like that.

I should add that the screws are not fully 'domed'... They seems to flatten out a bit near to the top. If you compare their profile to the domed screw used on the hood block you should see what I mean.

TM-10-1206, Change No. 4, Dec. 1, 1941 is the earliest known published Parts List for the slat grille MB. On page 30, under Group 0503-Water Pump, Fan & Belt, it shows 6 # 51492 screws 1/4"-20 x 1/2" are used to attach the Top Air Deflector to the Hood. This is the same data as found in the Feb. 1942 TM-10-1206 Parts List. I hope this information helps you.

Thank you all - very good info!
DanoZeman: did you mean to say that these screws are identical to the ones David was showing or to the image that I posted?
thanks,
Chris

Re: top air deflector attachment hardware question
I am not sure if this post is still 'live' but just to add some details regarding a Slat Grill hood I have which came off an early Feb '42 truck that I obtained in knock down form.
It is the correct hood with 9 section hinge with the original rad. air deflector plate still with it's wire fasteners and fitted by what appears to be the original screws, nuts and lockwashers securing it in place, it certainly looks like they have never been off or removed, strangely, of the six screws the two in the centre are round head and the four outer examples, two each side are slightly flat head!
Oddly though this hood also has holes for the grease gun bracket, although since this truck has the addition of the alloy dimension plate above the data plates I suspect that is may have been through a mid war rebuild which would include these two being added.
No doubt if I am incorrect someone will fill me in!

Re: top air deflector attachment hardware question
Old posting, arent there 3 versions of the air deflector? all relating to staples, first had none, last is the one pictured? Somebody updated it. Lots of time and hands can change lots of things, only takes a dozen years and a few coats of the po paint to make it look like its been there forever.

Re: top air deflector attachment hardware question
I believe the 1st pattern had staples but didn’t have the 2 clearance notches cut to clear the rubber hood block mounting hardware.
It appears that the type 2 deflector was put into production before the windshields where lengthened in January of 41. As I’ve seen several posts showing the type 2 deflector on hoods with long hood to windshield latches. I doubt many air deflectors needed to be replaced during the war.
2nd pattern has 2 clearance notches for hood block mounting hardware and staples.
3rd pattern has 2 clearance notches for hood block mounting hardware and no staples.
Hope this is what you where asking about.
