Slat Grill Pancake Air Filter

Post by Ronnie Guin » Fri Apr 21, 2017 3:01 pm

I have finally gotten the top housing containing the filter separated from my pancake air filter bottom section which contains the oil. My question is: does the filter come apart from the top housing or do you just have to clean it while inside the top housing? I tried to gently pry on some of the seams, but nothing moved. I have not seen any pictures of the filter outside of the housing?

If it stays inside the top housing then I guess that explains why they changed to the Oaks style filter?!

Thanks for any answers or pictures. :D

Ronnie, a lot of guys put grease in the pancake filter, instead of oil, not sure which is best,(there is grease in mine).

The top filter and housing are spot welded together. They don't come apart. The filter is a metal mesh and can only be rinsed out with an appropriate cleaner. I'd use kerosene. They would need to be soaked and then rinsed. Not the best solution to the breathing problems of your Jeep in my opinion.

My recommendation would have been to toss that inner and use the outer with one of the repro bottoms that Mike Stopforth had made and that is what I did. The original inner could never be cleaned completely so from my mind, it was useless. Thats just me... :?

I have an original top with a repro bottom sporting a nice fram replaceable filter.

P.S. I still have the original inner filter if anyone is looking for one. It's used.
