Wioring Harness Terminal #15
Bought this new wiring harness in 1989 and am now just getting to the point in the Slat restoration where most of the harness is installed. However, I can't seem to find where a terminal lead marked "15" is supposed to go. The 4" long lead is located on the driver's side under the dash and is part of the bundle that passes through the firewall.
Any information would really be appreciated.

Lou...if there is only 4" of cable on the inside of the firewall when the harness is installed I assume you mean where the main harness comes through the firewall on the driver's side. If that is the case then you have to look for switches or gauges that are in the vicinity of the end under the dash when installed. The only one I can think of would be the fender BO light which a slat would not have had.
It might help if you listed the wire info...is it RED or BLACK, does it have WHITE or BLACK dash lines around it and how many of them are there. Some wire is a heavy gauge and some is a thinner gauge...what about the one in question?

Chuck:
OK, here's what I found:
- all switch terminals appear to be correctly wired.
- the #15 wire is approx. 14-16 gauge and is black with 2 white tracings.
- the wire in question appears to be paired with a yellow wire ( with 2 black tracings) and has one end attached to the light switch.
Looking at the vendor's Harness Sub-assembly Description And Original Army Code, it does call out a 'Body Wiring Harness - Left Side - Short with a #15 part number. If the #15 tag refers to the harness and not the individual wire, then the wire jacket matches the driving lamp wire color and tracings in that harness. My guess is that this wire is the feed for the driving light (as you have suggested) and should just be taped off and forgotten.
Your take?

Re: Wioring Harness Terminal #15
Hmmm...if the harness was ordered for a later production jeep it would have had the fender BO wired into the loom. For an early jeep the loom would not have had the fender BO. I guess if you have correctly identified this wire by a combination of the length, location, gauge and color coding as the fender BO then you could tape off both ends and wire it up out of the way so that it does not short out the light switch on that side.

Yes, that sounds like the best option. If everything works when I start this puppy up, then it won't matter what that wire was meant to do. If something doesn't work, then that will answer the question. Win - Win.
The Jeep Police don't look under the dash board, do they?
Thanks for your advice.

Well...you COULD simply snip off both ends and the jeep police wouldn't ever know they had been installed if you plan on doing a factory class resto. On the other hand, did the main harness to the rear have wiring to a trailer socket included in it?

There was no trailer socket wiring included with the wiring harness. I think the fender BO wire just slipped past the vendor's QC people.

Re: Wioring Harness Terminal #15
I remember when I ordered harnesses for my two GPWs fifteen years ago from VWOM. I was asked about what was on each vehicle and what my intentions were with each one. The one for the 4/42 GPW with no trailer socket did not get wiring for one, but did get wiring for the fender BO. The one for the 4/43 GPW got both the Fender BO and the Trailer Socket as it would have from the factory. In each situation I was asked if I would be using a filterette. Then we discussed which type of connectors for the dimmer switch; bullet (Ford) or eyelet (MB).
One should always go over all these sight differences when ordering a wiring harness.

Chuck:
And there's the rub - when doing something for the first time, it's hard to know all the specifics that are unique to your vehicle even if you research the topic; you sort have got to rely on the integrity of the vendor to sell you the right item(s). And things still manage to slip by. That's why the 'G' is such a valuable asset.
And assuming that I still have your ear, another question: The installed battery splash shield has a approx. 5/16" hole in the front right corner. Any idea what it is used for?
Thanks again.

Re: Wioring Harness Terminal #15
The best any of my pals can agree on it is a hole similar to the two on the bumpers used to hold a "blank" in a stamping press before hitting the button. I think in addition to the wiring harness/loom holes, they are also found on the G529 trailer cross members and also on the cross member that holds up the T84/transfer case among other parts out there.

Chuck:
Thanks for the response. Except for a ground strap, there doesn't seem to be much happening in that area, so I had no clue why the hole was there.
Talk to you later.
