Large Scale Tin Car seeking help

Post by Jeff H » Sat Feb 24, 2018 1:21 pm

Hello All,
While this may not be G503 related, I hope that someone here can help me. I bought this large tin toy car at a yard sale in the exact condition you see it in. Someone separated the bottom from the body by breaking the spot welds. I assume the red texture finish is not original, but the last thing I would want is to strip it off and find out it was! If it was original, I would just spot weld it back together and leave it as is. The wheels and steering wheel are wooden. The paint that appears to be original underneath the body is olive drab! It is 30.5 inches long bumper to bumper. It is smaller than pedal cars, too small for a child to get in it, it is just a very large push toy.

What I am asking is to see pictures of similar cars to get an idea how to repaint it. i have tried my best to search google and ebay and cannot find any such large scale cars. Using search terms like vintage, tin, toy, car, etc, I see plenty of toy cars but nothing like this.

Don't know much about the car itself.
If I were to speculate about the OD color consider this:
After the war there must have been quite a surplus of OD paint on the market (lead and all). Anyone wishing to save money by using a cheap, durable primer might have considered OD.
The post office used this on many a corner mail box and delivery truck back in the day. Just say'in .

Thanks Guys.
No, it is too small for a child to fit in it. It does not steer, it is not a pedal car. A child would have to be a newborn baby to fit in it.

The inside/underneath smooth OD paint appears original. There seems to be no question there.

What I really need to ascertain before making an irreversible mistake is that the red textured finish on the outside is not original , I believe it is not.

Once I know that I will strip the outside, spotweld it back together, and, If I have no historical pictures to guide me, then repaint it to suit me.
