AN/VRC-47 Radio Setup

Post by Sgt Bennett » Fri Jun 02, 2017 5:25 am

This is for the radio SME's. I'm installing the 47-set in my Humvee (RT-524 with an R-442) and there's reference in the TM to an 'aux antenna' for the R-442 but I don't know what type of antenna this is supposed to be. It just uses the 1773 cable without the 4722 tuner cable like the 524 uses. Can someone please fill me in on what to look for?

The correct base is an AB-15 or AB-558, and then you can use either antenna AT-912/VRC or AT-1729/VRC.

PM me if you need one. I have a near NOS one I can part with.

Just to clarify this a little further. The AT-912 and 1729 are the tuneable antennas typically used with radios like the RT-524 and 246. The auxiliary receivers don't need a tuneable antenna so they use the simpler AB-15 or AB-588 bases with steel mast sections MS-116/117/118, however, you can also use the same AT-1095 fiberglass upper mast section used with the 912 and 1728 antennas with these bases. Make sure to use some lubricant when installing the mast sections to exclude water to keep the sections from "rust welding" together. Silicon grease or electricians anti-oxidation grease is perfect for this application.
