M1165 Build

Post by Ted Gates » Thu Feb 11, 2016 11:07 am

Well I have been working on my next project: M1165 REV. This is already a fun build. I started with a good tub, drilled for armor, and then installed:
tunnel insulation underside
populated the battery box area
body wire harness
electronic speedo harness
most ac hard lines
most ac wiring harnesses
steering assembly and shaft
4 spd shifter and parking brake lever
new brake pedal and brake switch with linkage
new style brake booster (diff part number than the first 12k)
New latest and greatest control box eeeeeeesssssssss lol
windshield frame (drilled for armor) fully equipped internally
rear wall and roof (not yet permanent)
rear seat bases
interior plating for front feet and door reinforcement thingy's
Kock seat belt setup, 4 man
TCM installed on top of the padding
The side tunnel insulation with wood decking still needs to be installed prior to the rear ac unit and I cannot do this until I fully set the rear wall.

Once I get the body populated (prior to the heavy stuff being added), then I will start working on the REV frame setup and drive train (6.5, 4spd, 272, 3.08 with liquid cooling and Wilwood brakes, etc).

Enjoy...

Awesome. Are you able to find the correct ebrske calipers for that?

I'll PayPal you a few bucks if you can get me pics to help with placement of fender condenser, dryer bracket, and holes in firewall by heater core tubes. I have the manifold for there just need to cut that ou .

Any chance I could loan my truck to you (free of charge, of course) for some experimenting? I wouldn't mind a slantback...

Jason,

Yes on the brakes, complete. Here are some pictures of what you asked for. For the filter, look at the existing picture from my original post on the front of the rr fender. You will see 2 holes, use the rivets as locators... I can more accurate ones this weekend. The ac manifold hole is tricky: shape and location but the pictures will show it location based on the rivets.

Others, thanks for the comps. I have been wanting to do an M1165 REV since they started making them. They have to be the most pricey hmmwv builds to do.

With the quality of work I see from the photos, I'd think this was a photo from the AM General assembly line. Out of curiosity, what is the purpose of the hoods that have the fixed grill that doesn't lift with the hood?

Its for the longer cooling stack for the heavy trucks.

Jason,
Here are some detail pictures for condensers and dryer bracket. On a factory tub, use the rivets as the locators. On the top of the fenders, metal strips for load distribution are used on the front 3 holes. For the rear holes, a square washer is used on the outside hole where it is single skin aluminum. The inner one is double skin.

More work done. Set the rear wall and lined it all up with roof, floor brackets and inner fender brackets. I am waiting on the correct screws for fastening everything down. Once I have some more parts, I will secure the roof, rear ac unit, and decking. I set the hard and soft ac lines in the rear and routed the inside ac wire harness (still have to fasten it down). It goes pretty fast when you have the parts on hand, but with any build, one item can and will stop you.

Enjoy.

Greg, I have one extra. I will post the part number if you want but it is in the book. If you can't find them, I can get them. Let me know however my cost is not cheap unfortunately.

Winter has been here finally so not much done. Just fitted roof and then need to unbolt and install panels under roof, then install outer roof and then bolt all back down. It is silly how this all bolts together. Fun though.

Well it's been a while since I posted, but I have made a lot of progress. I set the roof on top of the roof and liners. It all has to be done together and bolt dimensions are different from the book! Padding is last for I don't want to screw it up. Many holes, about 20, have to be drilled in roof, rear wall and b pillar covers to place secondary skin to truck. No books on that! I'll get some pictures up soon to show progess. These series trucks are nice!

Well I had a busy 2 months at work with limited time on this project. I was able to set outer skin loosely and later I will tighten it all up. I modified the 4sp shifter to accept a reverse light switch. You need to add an extra neutral switch but in a different location. Easy to do without mucking up the unit. No I just have to run wires to the backup lights. I'm getting close to setting the tub aside and commencing the REV frame build. Pictures sooner or later.
