So, I want to know what the heck a Luma is and why would you pet one? Is this a rare bird only found in the North Bay? Or is it a reclusive species of cat with luminescent eyes? Do they bite? Maybe we should organize a Luma hunt, similar to a snipe hunt, and send out recon patrols to bring one back. Johnnie V, what do you think? ...no, it's not a pinup girl from Europe.

Both spellings are correct. Meant in good humor. Sorry it didn't come off that way.

I believe a majority of military bases are either named with the location somehow in the name or they are named for prominent officers or such. Naming the event after the only MOH awardee listed as a Petaluma resident would be an honor to the town and to the gentleman himself.

do you have a name in mind? theirs a gentleman named don clouston, who served with the 101st in ww2.he was at normandy, bastogne, and served in korea.he has been in most of the petaluma veterans parades as an honored guest.i have shaken his hand many times, which was an honor.he is getting up there in years and he lives in the area, so maybe camp clouston would be appropriate.what do you think?

I like Camp Two Rock because a name that pinpoints the location is more likely to be used in conversation. The main problem is Two Rock is a ways away from KOA and some people will get confused. Camp Petaluma or Petaluma Bivouac are also descriptive. No matter what we do, like in NASCAR Sprint Cup racing the insiders will usually call the event by the nearest town. “You going to Petaluma?”

This is a good opportunity to tell my Two Rock story. The interesting thing about the super-secret Signal Intelligence Service code breaking unit at Two Rock, which changed names mid-war to Army Security Agency, is we had a member who was stationed out there as a radio intercept technician. Also his brother had the same job at the ASA location in Virginia! MVCC old timers will remember John and Richard (Dick) Secondari who were jeepers and radio fans. They lived together in SF and were at all the MV events. I think it was John who was stationed here working coded Japanese messages and Dick was back east working the German and Italian messages. They would pull down messages that bounced off the ionosphere. Downstream, cryptanalysts would crunch the letters and numbers. They used what they called “IBM Machines” which were punch card batch readers, among other tools.

General MacArthur wanted his own SIGINT unit working primarily on Japanese messages in the SW Pacific region, so he created a branch of ASA in Melbourne, Australia called Central Bureau which later moved to Brisbane. This was the unit that got credit for surfacing the famous message about Admiral Yamamoto travelling by air behind the lines, which resulted in an AAF fighter mission to shoot him down, which they did. There were other ASA units units upstream that helped with this

After the shoot-down, my father joined Central Bureau as a cryptanalyst, billeted on a golf course in Brisbane and they ended up in the Philippines. He had a finance degree from Cal and was good with numbers. After being drafted by the Army he went into the Advanced Specialized Training Program (interesting, check it out) and was sent to learn a language at the University of Maryland. He had the Had the choice of Spanish or French, chose Spanish, and the way the war was going they didn’t need a lot of Spanish speaking soldiers. At some point he ended up in the Signal Corps. Then ASA although I don't remember him saying much about it other than "code breaking."

I don’t know how long the secrecy rules forbade talking about the existence of units or their methods. If like the British, maybe 30 years or so? Now I think there is a chance he might not have attended the language school, although we have paperwork saying he graduated. He never spoke Spanish around the house even though my siblings and I took Spanish in Jr. High. He might have gone directly to a code breaking school within ASTP or something else.

We have his small unit history book, much like a high school yearbook with grouped photos of the members of the various sections which were like small platoons. Nothing about what they did.

I know. More than you wanted to read here. But you did. It was a World War with countless stories that are yet to be told. If you have one, pick a place and share it.
