Dodge 230 front engine plate troubleshooting
I'm attempting to replace the gaskets on the plate to block, and timing chain cover to plate. I have the oil pan buttoned up, but the only sticking point for front plate removal, is what appears to be, a threaded bolt that comes from the inside of the block? None of my manuals show this bolt if that's what it is?
It's the object that sits at the 8 o'clock position of the crank gear. Plate will not come off due to this 'object'...

Solved- Gents, nothing's easy! You have to drop the pan to get to the (1) bolt needed to remove that front engine plate .

Hi dodge members
Yes that bolt is inside, you will have to take the pan out to et to the bolt to get the timing plate off.
7 of mine engines don't have that bolt but 1 of them has one bolted inside.
Cheers Peter

Wow; are all 7 of your engines in trucks? That would be a great collection.

Re: Dodge 230 front engine plate troubleshooting
Thanks
Half of them are in the WC dodge and half are on engine stand restoring and I bought another engine which I will pick up in few weeks so total together is 9 dodge engines. I love WC dodge engines and stared collecting them I of the engine T214 had a note on the engine last running in 1946 it was sized and worn out, but almost finished and will do a first start in 72 years and will be on YouTube videos, I of the engine is a 25 inch Canadian WC dodge engine on the stand ready to run but missing a manifold for it as it didn't come with it. And the only few spare manifolds I have is a 23 inch but stuck looking for a 25 inch manifold for 2 years, but I think I may have found an 25inch exhausted manifold but not the intake manifold at my friend place as he has 74 wartime blitz truck and 9 dodges, 4 Diamonds T and 2 jeeps. he has a Hugh collection all line up.
If you are stuck with your dodge engine I can help .
Cheers Peter

Re: Dodge 230 front engine plate troubleshooting
Thanks but I am not stuck; I have done only 4 of them; one a 251 WM300 and the others, 230s from M37s and WCs; not nearly as many as you have. Tell me, which rear main seal have you used; the steel backed/ bolt on outside one, or the rubber ones?

The rear main seal, is at the rear of the engine and seals, the rear of the crankshaft. The timing cover seal is at the front. You know that.

Ok the rear main seal I am using is a NOS metal plate that bolt on the outside , it have a small black rubber on it.
1 of my engine did not had bolt on the back so I use the rubber one.
Cheers Peter

Good information; thanks. The one I am working on now, a T223, had a steel backed one bolted to the outside, but also has the machined slot for a rubber one.
