WC 1/2 ton tie rod ends
A friend of mine is restoring a 1/2 ton WC like I am. We had a discussion about the Dodge tie rod ends. he said they cost over 200 each. does that sound right? what are they made of
we both feel like we should replace all of our tie rods. these rigs get death wobble easily. although I was told by another club member that the kingpins need rebuilding in the axle with a restoration as that causes it too.
anyway he said a fellow he was talking to was able to match a tie rod at an auto parts store which was a perfect fit and the correct size but he had to change the taper. Does anyone have any experience with that? he doesn't remember the details as it was a while ago.
If these things are really that rare and valuable I could get some made and retail them at a fraction of the price. but i'd have to have hundreds of the darn things made at an investment of about 7000$. Not sure it'd be worth. It.

I know they are listed in the VPW catalog like this. I think there isn't a great demand for the half-ton tie rods hence the price:

Eighty years is a long time. They command big bucks due to being scarce. Collectors demand originals and most are willing to pay the price. Am thinking it's time to see if I still have any.

I think that left side may fit between the 3/4 ton and 1/2 ton, but not positive...may be the threads are a little different. Right side not interchangeable. Seem to remember that.

Best service the steering knuckle bearings and get the preload back to spec with new bearings while you are at it. Steering knuckles are one of the most neglected items on an MV.

Re: WC 1/2 ton tie rod ends
I see that Midwest Military has the 1/2 ton tie rod ends listed for $45 each -
was surprised at the reasonable cost. Has anyone tried these?

Re: WC 1/2 ton tie rod ends
Thanks for the all the replies.
I went thru the MWM site which is painful to browse. thought I saw some for 65. still confused as are some course thread, some fine thread? may have to just take apart one of my junkers to see. A friend said NAPA can match the tie rod, then drill out the taper to match.

this is a good document but doesn't shed light unless I need to read it again and again

Re: WC 1/2 ton tie rod ends
On my 3/4t Command Car I had death wobble bad starting at a lower speed, went back and checked the air pressure, added air, it went away.
It's not always new parts being tossed at things, if it's not worn it can still wobble.
Check it over using the methods for determining loose joints, like someone turning the steering wheel back and forth till it hits resistance while someone watches it, Spindle bearing preload with wheel in the air, king pin looseness by grasping top and bottom of tire and checking movement, etc. The old Motors manual should have specifics.
Worst case ream it out to be 3/4T and use a cheaper but tougher end if possible. Have to wonder if Ford Truck axles had the same tie rod ends.

And a reminder, CV Joints were the last thing on the mind of users of post war WWII surplus trucks, few owners were familiar with the required maintenance procedure.

Re: WC 1/2 ton tie rod ends
I always replace ALL the front end components when doing a restoration. I use NOS steering gear , pitman arm, drag link ,tie rod ends etc if possible. When it's done it feels like a new truck.

Re: WC 1/2 ton tie rod ends
The Midwest Military tie rod ends as mentioned above are for the 3/4 ton, not the half ton. His 1/2 ton are about the same price as the VPW ones. Just checked this past week.
