Honeycomb radiator core needed for 1941 Dodge 1/2 ton WC

Post by BATMOBILE1 » Fri Sep 15, 2017 1:56 am

Hi I've just had 2 radiators sent to get repaired but the shop said they both needed re-coreing, shame i thought i would have at least one chance one of them was good. One was blocked and they couldn't unblock it..? and the other had multiple leaks, they just wanted to take the easy option and replace the cores, shame.
So I'm looking for a company that might still produce the honey comb core for theses could have a standard core put in but it wouldn't look right..
Someone mentioned a plymouth radiator core was similar?
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers.
Paul.

Or.....take it to another radiator place. Sounds like he did not want to take the time to take the tanks off and rod the core out. No effort = easy money.....Your money. Take it elsewhere.

There are not many shops that can supply the WC honeycomb core here in the US. It may be just one now. Last time I checked it was in excess of $1500.00 and that was 10 years ago.

Yes I've checked out a few around here in the U.K. so i shall take them there.

The company i was using didn't want to make the effort like you say to take it apart and rod it out ...wont be taking anything back there any time soon.

I went through four Dodge WC 1/2 Ton radiators before I found one that was good. I did check into a new honeycomb radiator core. I could only find them in England or Australia...and they were closer to $2,000 USD's. I guess if one kept looking there may be a better deal. A lot of the old car restorers need them...older than the Dodge WC I mean.

The local radiator shop said they could fit a modern core to the tanks and slice a section of the honeycomb for the front. Which I thought was kinda interesting. However, my next radiator held up. I actually found another that also tested good, so I rat holed for my WC22 project. Something to think about when buying a 1/2 ton project. Only buy if the radiator is good. 8)

Hi Zeph,
Sounds like an interesting idea using the front of the honey comb as a front..
Wow $2000 ..that's a lot of money, well if I get both of mine done I can sell the other one to help pay for the first..!
I will keep an eye out for any more..

This is my experience as well with. My rad rebuilder said there was an outfit out of California that could do the honeycomb. it was many times the price of the recore that I had to have done for my 41 WC. the original honeycomb is beautiful though!

I have been avoiding this topic based on how my radiator looks. I should take it in to have someone look at it and get ahead of the time table. I have an original honeycomb rad, but not sure on the condition/functionality.

Back when I had my WC-1, it was overheating with the original Honeycomb radiator. I was able to flush it out after soaking it with CLR. I poured a gallon of it in there and topped it off with water after sealing the hose ends. I let it soak overnight then back flushed it. I got lucky as it had no leaks. It's also important to clean out the fins, as they are usually plugged with dirt and/or paint. Paint stripper and a pressure washer cleaned those out for me.

Thanks for the advice Marty,i can't get CLR over here in the U.K. but i will go and buy an equivalent product and see how that goes,CLR is a limescale remover so it should be easy to find something here, would be good to actually have a decent radiator without too much expense !
All the fins are clear ,and the radiator is pretty clean apart from one side needing replacing as its rusted away at the bottom, just the frame part that is..
Will ley you know how i get on.
