Regarding cost, I still have quite a bit to go when you factor in everything yet to work on. I have sides, back and tail gate, but need running boards. I think the glass, cab and interior are going to eat up quite a bit. Not sure what the engine rebuild will cost, but I'm going to drop the block, crank and head off at a local machinist to have it worked on. He's going to let me know what he thinks it needs after inspecting it.

I am rebuilding a wiring harness for a COnverto trailer (a simple harness), and I think it would be fun to tackle the WC harness. That thing runs nearly $900. Perhaps I can get it done for 1/2 that  Thanks for visiting and helping with comments. Makes me feel like I'm not alone in the trek.

Proceeding with the tear down and completed today. I removed all of the oil seals and the bearing cups. All of the bearing cups are in newish condition with no trace of wear or patina where rollers might have sat for a prolonged period. I'm going to reuse them all. I did not have a specialty tool for removing the oil washer for the shifter rod, so I improvised with a large screw driver being careful not to scrape the inside walls of the housing. As we learned in the cavalry,

1. If it works, its good :)
2. if it doesn't fit jam it and if it then breaks, well you needed a new one anyway!

Ill give the case and cover a thorough washing and then get to painting. I will need to clean up the bearing retainer covers and paint those as well. Saving that for the next day.

I gave the case and cover a good washing in hot soapy water, rinsed and dried it with a heat gun. I found a few remnants of gasket on the inner case screw taps and a small bit of grease in one recess and cleaned again. Should be good to go!.

I masked the inside where the seals and bearing cups reside to keep spray out of those areas. With the bearing retainers in place I primed. Will wait for drying to shoot with green.

I love the small details cast into the case.

I'll let these dry for a day and then install the bearing cups. By then the seals and gaskets should be here.

Just a note on the rattle can, the early ww2 lusterless in the rattle can is noticeably darker than from the gallon when thinned for an air gun. I touched up a few spots on the frame and I do not like the contrast. When the frame is finished will all OD components bolted on, I'll shoot it from the mix one more time.

Hi Oz,

Your transfer box is looking great in green,i was told the one that came with my truck was rebuilt? lets hope so,it looked like it had had the seals replaced and had been sprayed green along with the gearbox/ transmission ,so i have no way of knowing until i put it on and try it out.!

Do you think i should take mine apart to check?

Cheers.

Hi,
Great job with the build,
it looks like you have a few extra leafs. Any machine shop could easily make you a a set of bushings, press them in and ream them for your pins. Did you replace the center bolts? If I remember correctly the 1/2 tons use 5/16 center bolts.
Hi Kelly thats exactly what i did with mine,i had an engineering shop make them from scratch to fit an original spring bolt,I'm also having to do it with the rear spring hangers as you can't get them any more, they where worn oval,so the engineer is cutting them round again and making some bushes to match.

Paul,
It was a very easy to rebuild, so I would recommend doing it. When I looked into my differential, everything seemed fine, but the roller bearings were really in poor shape and I would not have known without tearing it apart. The entire rebuilding time on the transfer case so far is less than 10 hours, and assembly will go quick.

As a minimum I would take off the drive flanges and check the wear. That dirt and sand seems to cause a nice grove in the forward facing drive flanges underneath the oil seal which you cannot see unless you take those off.

They are installed with new over sized bushings not and everything is reamed to fit nicely. Just need some slotted nuts and not these castle nuts.

Finally after nearly 14 months I have a rolling chassis. Just need the slotted nuts, tighten everything down, then grease and fill the diff.

Amidst the mire that is my storage facility, workshop, restoration facility sits the current progress. I am planning to move to TN in about 2 years, and I have learned a lot about a proper workshop from trial and error and excellent posts by Zeph and others. I'll put all of that to use when I design and build my next home.

Looking good Oz,must feel like a real accomplishment getting the chassis rolling.

From what i can tell your talking about the nuts on the spring bolts not being castle nuts? mine are,is that wrong.?

Hi Oz,

I will check it out again when I'm back home,i will probably order up some gaskets first so i know i can damage the original, like you say worth having a look, probably all fine but i shouldn't take it as rebuilt and done properly either..

Where did you buy the gasket for the transfer case?

Thanks for the encouragement. I purchased castle nuts which have the slots on the top of the nut in a raised fashion. I needed slotted nuts which have the slot cut into the nut. THe castle nuts dont snug down far enough to get a cotter in the top where the castle rebdoubts are. I just thought castle and slotted were the same. :oops:6

Gaskets and seals arrived and I began the assembly of the Transfer Case.

1. cleaned up the oil seals
2. soaked and rolled the leather rings
3. drove in the oil seals
4. installed the gaskets and bearing retainers on the case
5. checked the fit and rotation of the gears and the shifter fork and oiled them good
6. installed gasket on case
7. placed cover on and inserted the dowel pins
8. installed bearing retainer gaskets, shims and bearing retainers

at a l stopping point for now. I am using the same shims and NOS gaskets in the bearing retainers on the cover side IAW the TM. Everything should rotate properly with no up and down play. I will verify this once the cover bolts are torqued down.

I affixed two speedi sleeves per the instructions. Don't forget to score the shoulder ring up to the lower groove before pressing it on. Other than that it was fairly easy.

Now I am almost ready to mount it onto the frame. All I have to do is touch up the bolts with some lusterless and install cotter pins and it can get bolted on.

I rigged a cargo strap to hoist up the transfer case into position. I left the longer driver's side plate mounting bolts loose so that I could move it around a bit when hand threading the case mounting bolts. It made everything a bit more easy. I threaded the upper case bolt on the long side first then hoisted the other side in place and threaded the two short side bolts. Once everything was tightened I wired the four case mounting bolts together so they cannot back out. I used 20lb steel fire. I will be on a bit of a break from restoration for about 3 weeks working on other things. Thanks for following the work.
