Mine were a LOT worse!!

In fact so worn thru the pins were coming thru the shackle.

I was lucky to score decent used shackles as I couldn't find them NOS

I re-read you posts on the bushings and shackles about an hour ago. You did great work. I just unpacked my bushings and pins for the rear suspension and the bushings for the frame connection are longer.

The pin between the arms is the one that goes in the spring eye.

Do I cut them before or after pressing in. do I cut them with cut-off wheel, hack saw or are these wrong. I ordered for the Type A from VPW

Also what do your hone the bushings to? 0.001" over?

Man I really don't remember..

I don't think I cut or modified anything. I just pressed in. Don't remember needing to hone down the inside diameter after either.

I bought mine from another source specializing in busting sand pins for old cars. Can't remember the place but could look it up for you?

That's cool. I will call VPW and ask about it. No need to dig that up. I'll post answer here.

Just got off the phone with Jens regarding the bushings being a bit longer than the shackle. He said.

"That's right, just take a hacksaw and file to them."

I have my answer and will get these ready for pressing in.

Measured and cut the bushings. I used electrical tape to give me a suitable cutting reference and placed it at 1.75" from one end which is slightly larger than the width of the shackle where the bushing goes in.

I used a fine hacksaw blade to cut as straight as I could along the tape line and then sanded the end smooth and removed any burrs on the inside and outside.

I then pressed the bushings into the shackles.

I used a brass wedge to expand the pin retaining clamps so the pin would slip in nicely.

Then I used my expandable reamers to size the bushings. The bushings shrunk slightly when pressing in. I started with the expandable reamer at a diameter where it would just slip into the bushing by hand, and then began expanding by about an 1/16 turn of the nut for each ream until the bushing pin juuuust slips in with a slight pressure. This way I did would not over-ream. I used oil to reduce the friction slightly during reaming. I alternated the shackles about every 2 reams just to keep from having to start from scratch again.

My reamer should not be set for the front bushings later.

Pin diameter 1.500"

Bushing inner diameter 1.480"

Will ream to 1.501"

The next step for me was to press in the spring eye bushings, ream them using the same expandable reamer setting. I only had to ream once as the eye bushings don't shrink much if any. The pins fit in with a slight pressure of hand.

Now I have to prepare the springs. I need the center bolts and will order them. I had to drill out one or the bolt head recesses as the bolt head was rusted in and broke off. I used a smaller drill followed by a milling bit of the correct side, being careful not to over drill. When I got to a certain depth, the old bolt head spun out leaving the original cavity.

Nice magnetism on the rear axle. Wonder if she got hit by lightning?

Finished chasing the threads on the rear axle U bolts. The nuts are questionable. I will probably order new ones. Just waiting on sand to finish blasting the two hubs, then I can assemble the entire rear axle to the frame. I can't wait. Finally some progress.

Up to bat is this "beauty" I learned much from working on the back axle, so hopefully I will make better progress, although there are some different considerations here.
