This past week a contractor has been cleaning water mains in my neighborhood. They have three flatbed trucks with Braden upright winches behind the cabs, which they use to pull scrapers and rubber disc cleaners through the water mains. But what really caught my eye was the huge 100,000 lb. capacity Braden upright winches they used to pull the wire cables. Never having seen the Mother of all Braden winches, I took some photos for to share their grandeur with you. Of the three flatbed trucks, this stubby was my favorite:
Here is this dedicated winch truck from the driver's side:
And now ladies and gentlemen, without further adieu, I present to you the Mother of all Braden Winches:
How would you like one of these Bad Boys in the bed of your Power Wagon? Look at the side of the gear case:
It is powered by double roller chains driven off a gear box that interrupts the rear drive shaft and is integral with the PTO. This straight-on rear view shows its massive footprint, perhaps too wide for a WDX bed just behind the cab:
The data stamping suggests it is a model AS-50, which in tons is a 100,000 pound winch:
"20-B" is the width of the original drum. "L" should mean there is a left hand thread on the pinon. Serial number "0072405" suggests it was manufactured in 1972.
So the next time you start feeling the 8,000 lb. Braden MU-2 on your Power Wagon might be a tad undersized, come here and gaze at it's biggest sibling, available to assist little brother with the hardest jobs around. Enjoy!

i don't usually dig up ancient threads that are not relevant to our toys but i have a beast of a Braden winch on the back of my old ford wrecker that is not as big as the one above but have been trying to figure out when it was built and what poundage it was rated at, if anyone reading this know what these numbers mean without guessing let me know. thanks!

Hi Willys41MA:
From the September 1953 Braden Master catalog, your winch serial number can be decoded as follows:
M = model series designation of your winch
U = underslung mounting for installation under the body (as opposed to upright mounting on the truck frame)
10 = capacity in tons, X 2,000 lbs per ton = 20,000 pound capacity on first wrap of cable
13 = interior width between of flanges (ends) on the drum. Your drum should be 10" in diameter.
K = drum keyed to shaft (no ability or handle to disengage drum from the shaft for free spooling).
L = left hand worm drive (typically used on winches mounted behind the cab to pull cable in from the bottom of the drum in that position)
The gear ratio for your winch is 32:1. It was often specified for use on cable dump trailers. Hope this data proves useful. Enjoy!
