1943 GPW 4WS?

Post by D.R.H. » Sun Jul 09, 2017 4:08 pm

Okay Jeep fans, what do you think? I don't know a whole lot about the 4 wheel steer except that maybe they were built a little earlier than '43.

The rear axel is a standard rear, The 4WS had the same hubs all the way around,

Ernie is right. It is not a 4ws GPW. I missed a night of working on my 43 MB frame.....time I will never get back.

The seller needs some lessons in writing, Hard to understand what he is talking about. 95000 miles on the original tires. Now that is amazing. Didn`t know GPW`s came with these type of tires originally.
Certainly he is a dreamer if he thinks this is worth $20,000.00.
Never enough time to do it right but always enough time to do it over.

If you want a real treat you should talk with him on the phone. He insists that he has a data plate on the GPW that says GPW 4ws.????????????????

To me...it is worth $600. The four wheel steering he said was a lever(4th shifter) which is attached to the overdrive sticking out of the post war 18 t-case. He said you steer the rear axle with this lever. God almighty , when will I learn. Nice guy though. Sean.

there's more to a 4WS than the rear axle. He doesn't show us nearly enough to do anything except assume it's a "normal GPW". anyone talked to him or got more pics?

Funny...I don't recall EVER seeing a real 4WS sell and I've been around this hobby since about '03 off and on. I THINK I'd have at least heard one sold...

Was it in volume 3 of AAW maybe? That one went all the way to the Humber and I don't know many people who have it. There is an old book specifically covering the experimental s, too.

Regardless, the seller doesn't give us enough to prove his argument. A front GPW axle isn't so hard to find. It's all the rest of the 4ws linkages and crap (that are "unhooked" that I would imagine would be where the real value is.

First, I would like to extend an apology to soccergorilla for wasting his time. I am sorry, :) , but look at all the fun and education You and I received from the rest of the Gurus! Second, Thanks to the rest of the Gurus for chiming in on this, it is really fun reading all of the comments and experiences of those who called the guy. :)

It was almost worth it really. I have a hell of a story of the whole adventure. There are many things that made the night a disaster that I will leave out but this is how it ended. This was the cherry on top. I had not eaten in 13 hours and was shaking -hungry from my deliverance experience and hit the taco bell at 130 AM on the way home...did I mention he was to meet me at the jeep at 730 PM? Anyway I order 9 tacos and a drink. Only one guy ahead of me in the drive thru. At the first window she tells me sorry but the guy ahead of me ordered 3 party packs of tacos(36 tacos) and all the meat is gone. She gave me a free drink and cinnamon crispas. Sweet! Sean.

101% not a GPW 4ws.

I have a book on the history of jeeps. Book is called "The Jeep", from Olyslanger Auto Library. Picture of 4ws
jeep on page 31. Quote from book: "Some of the early Jeeps had four-wheel steering but this feature never
caught on." Also on page 55 is picture and description of 4ws jeep developed in 1947 in London. Hope this added some insight into this discussion.

P.S. This book was published by Frederick Warne & Co Ltd, London and New York
