What's it doing?AllenHenson wrote: ↑Wed Nov 15, 2017 4:35 amwell I replaced the solenoid.... still a nogo, I'm going to try to bypass it / jump the starter just to figure out if it's the starter or not. I promised this fella a running GPW, I'm glad this popped up before it shipped.

A properly functioning solenoid will click when you turn the key to start. You normally can't hear it because the starter and engine noise drowns it out. So if, with either solenoid, you get a "click" then the starter is the problem.
Show the old starter before you return it for core. I may buy it for more than you're being charged for the core.

I'm fairly certain the brand of oil I put in it doesn't have anything to do with my starter issues...

Yes, I have seen many. Can you give some us some real true facts to back that up? I've used Pennzoil for 50+ years and my engines are just fine in the inside. Just for starters, my fathers 1968 Chevy pickup had 180,000 miles on it and never had the motor touched except for a timing chain that broke at 120,000.

I would first call Ron that runs the site here. Then I'd pop down to my GOOD local parts house, like NAPA or O'Reilly or even Advanced. Don't ask for a GPW, ask for a CJ2a. Same motor and starter arrangement used by Willys till around 52.AllenHenson wrote: ↑Wed Nov 15, 2017 5:19 amfack, it's probably the starter then.... Didn't we decide (upthread) that you have an Americar engine? You might pull yours first. I really have no knowledge of the pre-war stuff. Assuming it is the same as CJ may be bad.

Cleaning might work. Sometimes the solder inside the armature melts, or the winding on the coils inside the housing wear out. Those are the two most common issues. Or maybe a broken lead on a brush.
You might have a local alternator/starter shop that can check it out for ya.

[TITLE?] kinda scratching my head at the moment in regards to the starter, opened it up everything looks fine, I'm going to run it in to a shop.
I have an inspector coming by from the DMV L&TBI to start the title process, it's never had one. terrified the process is going to drag out. any faster way to get a title????
it's got to be in a conex and shipped to Surrey England in the next ten days!

If that is the inspector, I have to burn my title and start again.... Have you checked the brushes and field coils? Post a pic of the brushes and I will see if I can send you a test procedure for the coils.AllenHenson wrote: ↑Fri Nov 17, 2017 5:38 am[TITLE?] kinda scratching my head at the moment in regards to the starter, opened it up everything looks fine, I'm going to run it in to a shop.

haha I wish, that's my better half. The brushes have quite a bit of meat on them, I'm dropping it off here in a sec.
