Gauges

Post by Peterdodge6volt » Sun Aug 27, 2017 4:22 am

Hello gens
Just wondering how many of you hunting down for gauges and hard to find gauges
As oil temp gauges, GPW temp gauge, Autolite temp gauge, GAS gauge, 30 ampere guage, GPW gauges
I have never seen an oil temp gauge war time
I think I have 2 AC brass bezel GAS gauge.
I have to many autolite fuel gauges
I made 2 repro 30 amp gauges to use it on the slat jeep and early WC dodge until I find the original one, as the repro 30 amp gauge I made did came in handy to stop me stressed a lot to find an original 30 amp gauge and now I have one original 30 amp gauge for my early WC dodge thanks to Adam.

I spend almost 4 years looking for 30 amp gauge Autolite
7 year looking for Autolite GAS gauge and GPW temp gauge and now I found them and have installed them.

Still looking for volt meter gauge but I was told there are two different volt meter gauge Autolite and SW.

Thanks

cheers Peter

I am currently looking for an early SW paint can lid -50/+50 amp gauge.

Peter, VEP GPW's did not use the -30/+30 amp gauge or the "Gas" marked gauge.

I have the rest of the gauges with several extra. The SW paint can lid SW temp gauge is another hard gauge to find.

Also....still waiting for the gauges you were going to send.

Hi thanks for the reply
Stuart Unfortunately I do not have any early VEP gauge GPW they are really very hard to find. I will try contact my friends as he has some VEP gauges in Europe. I will let you know.

:o  OH NO thanks for reminding me Michael, I will sent them today after work, if not will sent it on Thursday as I have day off. Ian so sorry Michael, thanks for reminding me.
Yes Michael I agree with you that the early GPW had 50/50 amp gauge not 30/30 amp, as the 30/30 amp was used on Diamonds T trucks.

I am still trying to post photos of gauges but won't work. The only way I can post pictures is email if anyone like to see gauges.

Thanks
Cheers Peter

When did Ford discontinue the paint can lid gages? I am restoring a June '42 Script GPW / S/N GPW 38679.

David, unless new information has surfaced recently I believe the paint can lid gauges started being phased out in GPW production beginning sometime in April 1942.

Here's a set of original gauges I have for my early MB...the temp gauge is NOS. The oil pressure gauge has the wider studs on the back (and the corresponding bracket)....this is a way to identify an early vs late oil pressure gauge. The "GAS" gauge, +30/-30 amp gauge, and speedometer are obviously early.

I do have a question regarding the Autolite temp gauges used on Slat MB's. Did they have the wider studs on the back much like the early oil pressure gauges or the standard "thin" studs?

Thanks in advance.

Michael
The early temp gauge for slats jeep has the wider studs like the oil gauge, the later one are thin studs. The wider studs was change some where mid 42 to thin studs.

The early 42 GPW paint can lid style was change to standard gauges in April according to my gauge books.
GPW never had the 30 amp gauge it was 50 amp gauge. The 30 amp gauge belongs to diamond T trucks and federal wreckers trucks.

Michael your gauges will be sent tomorrow morning.

Cheers Peter

Jeeze....where to start?

1) this is a FOR SALE forum....if you want/need a gauge, post it THERE as you are missing the guys who have them for sale!
2) if you have one for sale then post a price or take the offer down....as the moderators will zap your thread for obvious reasons, this ain't an AUCTION site, go to ebay for that.
3) the thread was about MB/Slat gauges....which means GPW guys probably ignore it anyway
4) the "Other VEP slat gauges also have the fatter studs I believe, but just check your VEP Willys TM for the NUT thread size to answer that question and obviously using the 1943 Willys Master Parts book probably won't have any mention of a fatter stud needing a larger NUT as they would only be stocking the thinner, newer style gauges anyway.
5) the change at Ford from paintcan to std gauges would in all likelihood have been with the end of the First Contract....or, possibly when Ford decided to make the change and told each factory to use the paint can style until exhausted and then go to std gauge style...meaning it isn't as simple as the "end of April" in my estimation.
