VEP GPW SOLD

Post by 17thAirborne » Thu Aug 24, 2017 1:35 pm

I acquired this a few months ago in hopes of being able to do the body work myself. I've never done sheet metal work before, and after consulting with a few in the G503 I am certain that this is beyond my ability and availability of tools. I need to work on some simple projects to learn more before I tackle this. The frame will need a lots of help and the tub will need a good bit of work to fix the bottom pan and the rear panel. Having seen some of the great stuff done on the forum, I know someone else would not be thwarted by the task, but I unfortunately am. I am posting just a few images to show the overall condition, and what is included, but I have about 20 or more HiRes images to email you. Just send me a pm with your email and I'll fire off the images in a couple of emails.

This advanced project really needs someone with more acumen than I have. I hope it finds a good home on the G.

Included

1, Tub
2. Frame GPW Stamped GPW 3742 Dallas Plant march 42
3. Two fenders
4. Hood (both rubber bumpers are available, one removed for photos
5. Front Grill
6. Glove box door with two of the data plates and a shipping plate (I did not get the DoD plate)

Asking $1450 OBO SOLD pick up in NM, but could possibly deliver a few hundred miles for a fee.

You arent coming to PA any time soon are you? Shame it wasnt for sale last year as I was out there at the Floyd Lee ranch hunting elk. I would use the body for one project and the frame is probably close enough to use under a slatty.

Anybody in Texas I think, know what rest stop on Rt 66 that had or still has the Willys Jeep on display in the lobby?

some observations....

That tub is in pretty typical shape for those I've seen. What you have done to repair is very good. You are on the right track with the repairs as started. You are using the little clamps that retain the proper air gap for butt welds. I hate butt welding with an airgap, but it's the proper way to do it so good on you. The tub is certainly salvageable.

Make sure those weld joints are SUPER clean. You can MIG through primer and a little bit of rust, especially if you are using flux core, but MIG isn't forgiving like ARC (stick) is and you'll have issues. Plus, if you know where your thin spots are in the metal you will understand where and when you'll likely burn through while welding and can save yourself much frustration. (yeah....ask me how I know all that....)

The grille is for a much later jeep. If it's F marked, it's a post-April or so '42 standardized grille. Yours should have a "flat top".

Are the fenders Ford style? It's hard to tell from the pics on the passenger one.

Good luck selling.

Should have put it in a crate....lol. That way he can truly say "I got a jeep in a crate". Good wrapping job BTW.

Had three interested parties, but just too much kicking it around except for Rudi. I know it will get a nice restoration and remain part of history. I just need to get my WC12 done so I can begin on my other VEP GPW. Body and frame work on that will not be as much of a challenge for me and I already have the engine rebuilt.
