Re: shovels and more shovels ADDED more info

Post by Johan WILLAERT » Sat May 11, 2013 7:54 am

I came across this shovel which has a couple of features that I had never encountered before...
Would like some input on production timeframe and use...

When I found it, it was covered in several layers of red paint over black, no OD was found while removing the paint...

Marked 2 over HEAT TREATED over D 5
Handle is marked: PIQUA.OHIO U.S.A. which google tells me was the home of the WOOD Shovel & Tool Co
Handle is reinforced on both sides where the blade is attached
Handle end has a metal tip visible on the open blade end

All info appreciated... Thanks

Here's another official reference to the shovels...

Quartermaster Supply Catalog QM3-4, List of items for issue to troops, miscellaneous organizational equipment (dated 1945)

Shovel is listed on page §&7: Shovel, General Purpose, D-Handle, Strap Back, Round Point, N°2 StockNr 41-S-3170

Here's an axe from my collection bearing the Stock Number 41-A-1277...

Note how there's a difference between this one and the Axe, Camp also shown on page 1 of the manual referred to in the previous post...

So from what John posted before, this would be the correct one for the Jeep... But how about the Camp Axe???

My axe is proof that sometimes tools were marked with the stocknumber... So how about shovels? Has anyone come across a N°2 shovel with stock number?

Believe the GI on the right in this picture has one of these U.S.E.D. marked shovels...

It appears that we have lost John Barton's images. At least on my browser. Wish I had copied them.

I know this is everything you wanted to know about tools but were afraid to ask.But we haven't said any thing about the little M38 tools.I've got an axe But shovels are a different animal can someone with knowledge tell me if they are the same or a different animal. Thanks
