Rustman's Rusty Flea Market Tool Thread

Post by Rustman » Fri Mar 09, 2018 11:09 am

I have spent the last few cold months waiting on flea markets to open by studying this section. I still have an immense amount to learn and sadly the most effective way for me to learn is often to buy a tool, take it home and research it. Then find out it's post war. But the fun is in the hunt. I'm near a big casino but I don't gamble, well I don't gamble in there. Instead today I stopped in the pawn shop and bought some hand tools. More on those in the next post. I hope to make this a thread of what I find over the summer.

First are today's tools. A Penens 1675 speed wrench, a P&C 6" and an S-K Wayne socket. That I now know is too new. I'm pretty happy with the speed wrench, even if not absolutely correct for a GMTK it at least looks better then my current stand in. The adjustable wasn't necessary. I must have almost a dozen in various sizes. But I'm a sucker for them.

Also last week I picked up this for a mere 20 dollars!! A Nesco 1942 galvanized jerry can. Since this is the tools forum I also posted the jerry can here: viewtopic.php?f=37&t=295372 for it's own discussion.

Nice 42 can; also P & C Tools (Portland, Oregon ) did supply the military during WW2 but not sure whether they supplied the 6" adj

Slim pickings today. I passed on an 18" Rigid pipe wrench with pre-war/war-time features because I was feeling parsimonious. Kinda kicking myself for that now. They are plentiful enough. But it would have been nice to check it off the list today. But alas I was saving my pennies for the Baltimore Antique Arms show next week. I did pick up this stubby screw driver for a dollar. No markings but it appears to meet the standard otherwise. It'll be an improvement over my VACO, which in turn was an improvement over the "Made in China" I had in the box before.

As my GMTK is used at reenactments/living history events it has evolved differently then others. Three years ago I went through my many many tool boxes of accumulated tools and assembled most of one out of what I had without regard for period unless I had two of the same tool. In which case I chose the more accurate one. So over half my sockets are chrome, some are even Husky brand (gasp!). Over time I've swapped tools out as I get more appropriate ones. The speed handle up thread is another example of an upgrade to the box.

Today was a pretty good day at the pawn shop. Turned up several good wrenches.

PLOMB 1130 9/16x5/8 DBE looks to be 1945-48 according to Alloy Artifacts. So alas post-war.
VLCHEK W2225 11/16x25/32 DOE looks to be an earlier one
WILLIAMS 727 9/16x5/8 little early for my GMTK at 1914-1924
Duro-Chrome 2062 1/2x9/16 DBE looks to be 30's through early war?
Craftsman "BE" marked 11/16th appears to meet the war era requirements
Snap-on specialty right angle tool. No idea yet.

No flea marketing today. Instead I went to the Antique Arms show in Baltimore. Turned up the following WW2 ammo, Starrett 559A screw driver and this electricians knife by CAMCO 229 "Property of US Govt." etched into the blade. Ammo cost me a pretty penny. Screw driver was out of a dollar bin. I looked on eBay. Looks like I'll be selling it. I thought at first it was just a nifty screwdriver for a buck. But I don't think it's that nifty! As for the electricians knife I plan to put it into my GMTK. It'll serve nicely until I pick up an earlier example then I can slide it over with my other Vietnam era mechanics tools.

Sunday morning on the way to church swung into the flea market. I thought it was a nice day. Wife said it was too cold and waited in the car. A couple of vendors had tools. I was able to paw through some boxes and pull up a few useful or at least interesting items. You never know when a Whitworth/British Standard spanner might be required. The two sockets are New Britain but I haven't been able to discern their age. Two grooves, but no hashing. 11/16x5/8 doesn't appear to be a proper GMTK wrench size but it's an appropriate era Craftsman wrench for only 50 cents. So why not right?

Walden 3150 1/4" ratchet. Vlchek PR206 pliers, Williams waterpump pliers. Seem to meet the GMTK spec, clamp is a Cincinnati Tool, cutters are Krueter. But the real gem I think is the Rigid 14" wrench. Check out the decals!

That’s a good pipe wrench find. Check out the label on the MVMTS toolset 10” pipe wrench.

The characteristics of the pipe wrench look '30s to me. Still nice to find one with remnants of the sticker.
I'd like to see some close ups of the water pump pliers and the Walden ratchet. The dark colored Walden ratchets are difficult to come by.
Looks like a good day flea hunting!

Don & Jason re the Ridgid Pipe Wrench. It would appear to be the same design as the pre-war MVMT but at 14" would have been in a pre-war upper echelon kit, but not the GMTK until later. That all out of the way the decal advertising the Alloy handle and jaw suggests to me that this wrench is circa 1937 or so (the date I think when they switched up the material). I would imagine by war time there wasn't a need to advertise that they had changed the formula.

Regarding the Walden ratchet and the Williams water pump pliers here's some more pictures. Jason let me know if you need to see some other stuff on these. I can take more pictures. It's hard to read but below Williams it is marked 1521. I saw no other markings on it.

They were doing that advertising for quite a while. SillysMB posted this catalog page some time back. You might take a look at the numbers on the moveable jaw. Wingnutt did a survey and has come up with a dating theory based on the last number being the year. Does your wrench have a patent number on the handle?

Co-incidentally I picked up one of these 14" RIDGIDs at a flea market yesterday. It is in excellent condition, with no wear at all on the jaws and both springs working, just a couple of owners identifying notches, but unfortunately the nut has been cracked or broken in two places and stick welded back together. I may get round to tidying up the welding sometime - not sure. I was tempted to leave it when I saw the welding, but the seller only wanted £0.50p ( around $0.65c ) so it came home with me.

The TRADE MARK and PAT are on there, with the 1929 Patent number. The numbers cast on the movable jaw look like B-13-6 or B-19-6, so if the theory holds that would be '36, '46, or '56 I suppose.

That combined with the style of the handle would indicate 1946. The ‘36 and ‘56 handles would have been different.

Thanks Don, at that price I'm not taking it back. The lack of wear on the jaws and springs is particularly noticeable. :D

Funny story about the Ridgid pipe wrenches. For probably close to a decade I had a pair of 18" ones in my work van. Used in residential and later commercial HVAC/plumbing/gas/oil work. I bought them used at a yard sale as a poor apprentice. Probably spent $10 on the pair, one being an aluminum handle version. Just a few months ago I came to realize that the steel handle one is circa WW2! (plus or minus a couple of years) Square bottom to jaw, fully knurled nut and no bulge to the bottom of the handle. That's the quality of those tools. It had already been in use for decades before I got it. Then for about ten years I was using it probably once a week.
