OB-Jake Flea 2018

Post by USAFpj » Thu Mar 01, 2018 8:42 am

Well, me and Jake (13yr old Son) hadn't been to the flea market in months, and it was killing us! Beautiful weather all week except for the projected market day for Wednesday. I told him we're going rain or shine. As you can imagine, sloooowwwww with only a few sellers. Picked up a few items, though. I left behind an entire cardboard box of 1/4in None Better tools with a few wartime Williams and Snap On sockets, but Jake and I are saving for a wiring harness for the WC52, so pennies are being pinched  .

3150 Walden 1/4in

Though not wartime, I'm a sucker for all of these tin socket boxes- this one from Vi-Chrome out of Ohio. Mud, without cheating and researching, do you know what lineage Vi-Chrome comes from?

Good job on the 1-1/16" D-I socket, OB! That size is the hardest to find, in my opinion.

  . Well, this particular vendor is an interesting guy to visit. He always has quality items, but knows what he's got, too. The reason we go to the market is that you'll most likely see a correct quality wrench and can usually get it for around .25 if you buy a couple of them. This guy has a starting price of $5 on each of them

If he wasn't such a loudmouth, I could probably do more business with him. On the other hand, there's an Italian gent who acts like you're cutting off his hand if you even dare ask for a price reduction. But he's hilarious about it, and Jake and I normally give full retail, just because his acting is so good.

I know I've heard of them before... but I can't recall exactly. If I were made to guess, it would have to be Herbrand.
Yes?

Jake and I hit the market today- beautiful weather, but a bit windy for the dealers :? . The dealers have their prices up, but since we're fairly close to getting the WC52 running, I don't mind passing up some stuff that's a bit too much for me. If we scoot along according to plan, we should be driving the WC to the market by the end of the Summer?

More research needed, but the 3Ton hook (FORGED USA) should be a great addition to the 6K lb MU2 Winch on our 52 :P
WEED chain pliers(Pat 1915) with .50 cent stamping into the forging.
FAIRMOUNT 730 5/8 x 13/16
ARMSTRONG 1731-A 3/4 x 7/8
CRAFTSMAN No.1 extra long tappet 17/32 x 7/16
PLVMB 5264 handle with 'WAR FINISH'
HUSKY CM 41G 1/4in ratchet
BONNEY Bonaloy 1161 7/16
Duro Chrome 'X' 1731A 3/4 x 7/8

Although not fully part of the GMTK, I uploaded items that I understood to be wartime. Always open to critique, though- it makes us better!

That 1/4" HUSKY ratchet is a sweet find! Very cool. I don't think I've seen that style in 1/4" before.

That Husky ratchet IS cool! Also like that 1-1/16" socket upthread.

Doesn't the C- in CM stand for CHROME?

It's a very cool ratchet, but it's 1950's. The entire NB empire dropped the familiar wartime style ratchet (Costello patent) and went to that style (Fors patent) in every drive size in 1947, with a smooth handle, and then a paneled handle in 1953.

Gents, we got quite the haul today :D . Sorting and pics to follow. Prices seem to be creeping up without much room for negotiations these days? Or maybe I'm just getting crankier...

Although not wartime, it's hard for me to pass up a Simonsen GI Air Force named toolbox

Interesting haul of (33pc) Circle H and BE Craftsman sockets- most of these all came from one vendor- someone had a very extensive machinist's background.

I thought I found the holy grail with my Kraeuter offset screwdriver- until I did G503 research and saw that it's a bit too short for the GMTK

I have a hard time passing up anything Vlchek, so the DBE and Cape chisel were a welcome team

(2) Red Devil knives

Billings Vitalloy shortie- hard to find what era these are, gents??

Heller 6in file

Walden 1728 DOE

Set of UNBRAKO keys- my machinist Dad said the edges look like they've never been used?

If anybody needs any of this stuff, let me know- I owe you Steve!

Interesting that they came in those 1930's era Walden-Worcester boxes. Those would probably bring some nice spending money on eBay from guys with 1930's era Walden-Worcester tools looking for boxes or boxes with better labels.

No worries OB and Jake - that is one of the hardest tools to find in the right dimensions and specs.

Wartime for sure. Vitalloy was trademarked in the late 30's and they are branded just like the M- series DOE's. I have a partial set of the DOEs going. The Vitalloy tools to avoid are wrenches with a fine fancy stamped branding accompanied by grooves. Those are post-war. You may have a hard time completing the shortie set, though. I hardly ever see them. I may have one. I'll check. EDIT: Nope. It was a Bonney Zenel I was thinking of. They have a similar panel.
