Electricians Tool Set Restoration

Post by pjones » Sun Jan 28, 2018 10:24 am

I found this really cool box a few months ago at one of my favorite flea markets. The vendor had put his stuff out and was off looking for other things to buy. Unfortunately this is why you have to get there so freaking early. I looked through his stuff including the set and the price he had on it. It was much more than I would have paid but I decided that I would swing back by before leaving. As I finished up my morning I went back and dang (yeah right) the set was still on the table. I approached with a number in mind telling myself that I wouldn’t buy it unless I got it for that number or less. As I asked what he would take for it he immediately said “the lowest I can take for it is” ….. and it was the exact number I had in mind. After lugging it across the flea market and with my back screaming I finally made it to my jeep. Dang (yeah right) the set was headed home and I was already wondering how to sneak it into the house. No need for me to worry. Over the years one gets really adept at this. These old military boxes always draw my attention but most of the time they don’t have a intact list of contents. For some reason every time I find an old military chest with a list of contents I have an overwhelming need to restore it back to as near as original as possible. I’ve even given up trying to fight it. So I didn’t start out the day looking to put an electricians set together…… but it had to be done. 99% of what was in the box wasn’t original to the box but a few items appear to be and I left them in the set even though they weren’t in great shape. I’ll sell off what was in it and cover the cost of the box. I can’t begin to tell you how much fun I had putting this set together and I can’t wait to find the next box! Thanks to Don for helping out with the auger and drill bits!

Like the mechanic the electrician was an unsung hero who served a very vital role to the war effort in ww2.

Nice, as an electrical contractor who has been at it for 40 years it is telling how many of those tools I used and the company's are still in business. Particularly the folding rule and the brace and bit. Steel tapes were flimsy and I used my rule probably 4 years or so before switching to tape measure. We also took a brace and bit into attics as it was pre cordless then and dragging a cord and drill was not worth it. I still have my original Greenlee knock out punches in the leather rolls somewhere. I did not know the voltage meters we used back then and called "wiggy's" were from a Company that had that name. Cripes I would have fit right in.

Thanks Guys! I really appreciate it.
Steve, I thought you might enjoy this set given your background. Stay tuned as I have more to post that I think you and all the tool guys will enjoy.

Here are some photos of the M1921 Canvas Tool Bag. This bag was included in several other sets and it's included in this set as an empty bag. Interestingly this one had a horseshoe in it. I suspect that this bag was used to carry items you needed for a particular job to the job site rather than having to carry the entire set.

Amazing. You can't get a better good luck charm than that! I would tactfully tack it up on the underside of the lid! Or at least put it in the box.

So Square D owned the wiggy and still carries it although a lot bigger. A company called Knauf had a voltage tester that was small like that in the 60's

Wrong name Knopp had a small one also

https://www.ebay.com/i/372128363328?chn=ps I would get one of those if the old wiggy was not available as it would fit in the roll

Here are a few pieces unique to this set that I don't recall having seen posted before. I won't be posting photos of all the pieces but if anyone wants a photo of a particular piece let me know and I'll gladly snap a few.

Lastly, there are 2 pieces I need for this set to be complete. Let me know if you have any of them or even what they look like.

1. Flashlight, Electric hand, With Batteries and Lamp, Non-focusing Type, Black Enamel, 3-Cell
2. Wire, Fish, Steel, Flat, Flexible No. 1, Length 100 Ft. With Puller Reel

Thanks,
