Thanks, OB.

Thanks, Matt. Good to know. I can believe armorer's. This thing is heavy!

They are all nice boxes, but the thing that struck me about your recent find when compared with the earlier find, was the very substantial metal handle and matching substantial handle mounts - goes well with your observations on the weight.

I thought it might have been policy by mid war to do away with fixed locks like those, and just make provision for the boxes to be padlocked if required?

Union probably made the whole box. They made all kinds of boxes for the Ordnance Dept, the Signal Corps, and the Corps of Engineers. My M5/M6 box was made by Kennedy. The compartments were probably a government spec for the type of box.

The box does not have brackets for the tray but the tray hooks over the top of the box. It only has 3 hinge elements each side.
Total weight empty is 14lb. I think it may be more similar to your M5/M6 Directors box which may be missing a hook on tray.

Interesting design, Roger. The other M5/M6's I have seen have had tray supports, and mine doesn't, so I suspect you're right.

I wouldn't characterize it as a 'need', but I would snag one if it turned up at the flea for sure.

The Noteworthy...

The Craftsman 16-oz ball-pein hammer has a really nice wartime Long C geometric logo. It also has traces of classic Long C Craftsman era blue enamel paint, so I suspect it was from a WWII era 125-piece Master Deluxe set.

I don't know if the S-K 8" adjustable is wartime, but it looks like it could be. The 6" adjustable is a 1944 JPD.

The little Herbie DBE is an Ultra Box 6923 3/8 x 7/16. It's not a GMTK wrench with 15* angle heads, but interesting with the AISI 9445 marking (which makes it June 1943+ based on WPB Order E-6) and the "VAN-CHROME" marking.

The 6" round-nose pliers are WILDE K.C. MO. and the 6" dykes with the "U.S." stamp are Crestoloy. Both good for GMTKs.

The only DOE wrench that is GMTK worthy is the Armstrong M-1723.

I picked up the New Britain NDF just because I rarely see those panel style wrenches and it has a phosphate wash finish.

The big DOE wrench is interesting. It's marked KRIEGER, which is Krieger Steel Sections, Inc., in Long Island City, NY. They made all kinds of equipment for the US Ordnance Dept during WWII. They also had a pair of contracts with the US Ordnance Dept for "engineers wrenches" in late 1943. They sub-contracted to Bonney. All the examples I have seen are Bonney made and they all have a date code within the contract range. This one is a 1032A (15/16 x 3/4) with a "J.U." (10/1943) date code. So, not a GMTK wrench, but a keeper nonetheless.

- The DOE wrench is a MAC D9L (3/4 x 7/8), 16" long, with classic MAC hex throat openings and the "SABINA, OHIO U.S.A." marking. If it's not wartime, it's 40's for sure. More pics later.

- The smaller tappet wrench is an unmarked (but it's a Vlchek) “90A” (7/32 x 7/16).

- The hinge handle is a MUSTANG MS 57. (I found a MUSTANG MS 58 speeder last year, so I am right on pace to complete a MUSTANG 1/2-inch drive socket set by 2032.) Probably late 40's.

- Milwaukee Tool and Forge 1/2-inch drive socket with a 13/16" service opening marked with the size and the "MTF" monograph. Probably pre-war.

- Snap-On SF-240 (3/4") 3/8-inch drive deep socket with an "E" (1944) code

- The small box with OD green wrinkle paint finish contains a complete WWII 14-piece Husky 1/2-inch drive socket set. More on that later.

- The bigger OD green box is also WWII, but a mystery box. More on that later, too.

- And even though the knife isn't military or WWII, it was made – taking a grand leprechaun-size bow in honor of St Paddy's Day – in....
.....the REPUBLIC OF IRELAND!
