Post by Stingray » Thu Nov 16, 2017 4:30 pm

Is the number on the bottom of this Pyrene extinguisher a date or does it have another meaning? Thanks

Could be...

The two patents (post-April '44) and "Newark 8" suggest late war/early postwar vintage. The "1-50" may not be a factory date mark but rather a user inspection date?. That would explain a slightly earlier vintage FE.

What I recall from looking at the Pyrene serial numbers 10+ years ago is that the regular and HVT ranges did not seem to correspond. Also, there was great variety in cities referenced on the tags. Those factors complicated the age determination when you had two patents referenced (1,688,195 and 2,347,548). At least if you had a one patent (1,688,195)+ "PAT PEND" on the T handle you were sure it dated from April '42 to April of '44 -- the second patent pending period.
