Another "Take Home Kit"

Post by pjones » Mon Oct 30, 2017 3:25 pm

While this isn't an original idea Wingnutt's living history was just too great an idea not to try and recreate. The letter home may have been the most challenging part and though I'm not nearly the accomplished author Greg is I thought I'd give it a try. Besides what's a living history without it? My kit is composed of items I felt a guy coming home from the war may have included in a "take home kit" and foot locker. The foot locker is 1942 dated and manufactured by the Shwayder Bros. Inc. I used 1942 advertisements for inspiration to put together the personal affects bag and the GMTK while hybrid is based primarily on the SNL N-19. I was very fortunate to come across a mechanic's class notes and some of his books as well as some photos from what appears to be a training facility. There are also a number of other original photos. There are a handful of Army Motors magazines and even a few war era hunting magazines.
For those keeping track this is another complete GMTK not previously shared here on the gee. There are a couple of place holders as you will see for yourself but overall I believe it is a solid set. Feedback is always appreciated (except about the letter home!! ). Hope you guys enjoy.

Very well done, Phil! I'm glad you were so inspired! And, while my accessories were just enough to authenticate the kit, yours are actually a whole collection in and of themselves! I'm impressed. And I thought the Outdoor Life and smoking pipes were a particularly nice and fitting touch. As for the originality, it's nice to be first, but two now makes it a trend. Three and we have a G503.com tradition. So let's see who's next. :D

Wonderful period feel to your photos and kit Phil. He sure was one clean dude with all those toiletries! Loved the 'trench-art' wooden jeep and the mechanics insignia (?). Thought he may have thrown in a screwed up version of SNL N-19 as a keep-sake. Wouldn't it be great to track-down all those "grease monkeys" in that motor-pool.
Your stubby screwdriver looks similar to my Goodell-Pratt/Miller Falls example:

Thanks Cliff. Tommie would have to have plenty of "smell good" to cover up the aroma of the motor pool wouldn't he? I like the wooden jeep too. Dad found it at a flea market in central Florida a few years back. Those photos from the motor pool are a prize procession and I would love to know more about those guys as well. I haven't taken them out of the photo album to see if there are any names on the back but I might. One thing that would really compliment the GMTK discussions would be to find and interview a ww2 mechanic. No doubt there would be many forgotten things or mis-remembered things but just to hear his experience would be awesome. With each year that passes it becomes more and more unlikely we will find one. Here is a better picture of my screwdriver.

Jason,

Those coveralls are readily available. You can buy a repro set from At The Front. They stock them.

Thank you,
Henry

If you could find a blank "V-Mail" and then find a 22-year-old to copy what that letter says in his own inimitable scrawl I think that would be cool. Motorpool types in WWII didn't write with a perfect calligraphy script as far as I know. Maybe add a smudged fingerprint or two around the edges and perhaps use a pencil?
