Dear all,
As promised to one of our fellow G members...
I recently aquired 2No. toolboxes.
I have been looking for one for a long time, but in Europe they are pretty scarce.
Both will be cleaned and newly painted.
The one with the markings will get RAL6014 paint with some of the markings back and metric tools.
The other one will get lighter green and all the old tools I have collected till date.
The corner protectors all have the same shape, rounded and not pointed.
The connection of the handle brackets to the lids is different, as No1 is rivited and No.2 is spot welded.
No.1
No manuf. stamp or whatever.
17 hinges
Thin steel
A lot of paint marking, all in Dutch.
***
on the lids:
-STAF-BT (HQ Batalion)
-5
-WAARDE FL 265 (VALUE 265 Guilders)
on the sides:
- GEREEDSCHAPS UITRUSTING (TOOL KIT)
- MONTEURS UITRUSTING (MECHANIC TOOL KIT)
- 5180-17-704-3274 (NSN number)
I assume there is some sort of logo present, but it was too far gone to make anything of it.
No.2
No manuf. stamp or whatever.
32 hinges
Thicker steel
No markings at all
It has the tray, but I'm going to use it for the other toolbox, as they do not belong together.

Re: 2No toolboxes
FJ,
As you probably already suspect, the first box is post-war. Could be as late as 1970's with the 13-digit NSN.
Your second box is wartime, made by Union. The hinge elements, the indents for the spot-welded handle tabs under the lid, and the removable tray supports (an ingenious, simple design) are classic Union tells.

Hello,
First box will be painted RAL6014 soon.
How do you see that the tray supports are removable?
As I see them, they are fixed and are just folded lids?
All 4 lids are now straightened and back on the boxes.
Most large dents are removed, and all the wear dents I leave as they are.

Re: 2No toolboxes
The word "removable" is qualifying the word "tray", FJ, not the word "supports". "Supports for the removable tray" would've been clearer. Sorry for any confusion. The supports are indeed fixed, and just a clever bent piece of the sheet metal.FJ.Janssen wrote: ↑Thu Nov 23, 2017 10:49 pmHow do you see that the tray supports are removable?

Nice job on the box.

Re: 2No toolboxes
The second ‘Union’ style box could also have been made by Giller, who must have acquired the Union box production technique at some later time. The riveted handles are a post war tell. I think Tin Medic posted an NSN marked Giller box with the same construction.
The first box is interesting because of the 17 hinge element design typically a Hamilton tell, but, to my knowledge, they (Hamilton) always stamped the lids with the company name. Could be early or late production... never seen one like that before.
Thanks for sharing the pictures. Looks like you’re doing a great job refurbishing both boxes.

Re: 2No toolboxes
I see no rivets on the handle tabs on box No. 2, which is a Union box. As I told FJ upthread, it looks like a wartime box to me. I think you're talking about No. 1, the box that had all the Dutch markings and the 13 digit US NSN. That appears to be the one he just stripped and primed.
