Re: Tools in my NAF Kennedy cantilever box
Cliff! I can't believe someone followed through on my recommendation!!! I've been looking for one ever since I posted the page from the Navy ASO catalog. That is flat out the COOLEST thing I have seen in this hobby in a long time!

Re: Tools in my NAF Kennedy cantilever box
Yes Greg I remember you suggestion from your initial thread and bore it in mind for this set-up. Three boxes of tools are incredibly heavy and may even outweigh a single Kennedy complete with tools from your 1944 US Navy-Aviation Supply Catalog!
BTW could you please add a detailed image of the Type 1 Screwdriver Specification I mentioned in my previous post? It's very difficult to read the fractional numbers from your original posting.

Cliff,
Great shot of your sets on the hand truck. Here is an old picture of a probable Kennedy cantilever toolbox in action.

Will do. EDIT: Done! See here.
They are going to need a lot more than whatever is in that toolbox to repair that rudder!!!

True. That rudder will take a bit more than just fabric and dope. A few new ribs for sure.

Re: Tools in my NAF Kennedy cantilever box
I was just reading this thread and saw the picture of the two wheeled warehouse truck in the ad. I have one that is identical to the one shown in the ad. Mine is USAAF vintage as it was purchased by a relative surplus from Kelly Field after WWII. My dad got it and now I have it. For painting purposes the one I have was completely OD. I distinctly remember the paint being in good shape when I was a kid but over the years dad would leave it outside from time to time and so it got a little rusty. A few years ago I talked him into letting me take it to restore and add to my AAF collection. I cleaned off the rust and it has a coat of primer on it. Just need to finish off with the OD. I will get some pictures at some point and post them.

Looking for ward to seeing those, Redmec. I've been hoping one shows up on one of my weekly stops.

Re: Tools in my NAF Kennedy cantilever box
I found a few items on Thursday that I will be adding to the NAF box. I found two pipe wrenches. One is a 14" Trimo that has USN stamped at the bottom of the handle. The other is a Walco 18" dated 1944. They will be replacing the more common Ridgid wrenches currently in the box. The other item is a Rivet set that appears in a couple of upper echelon sets as well as the NAF Class 41 catalog. This is the first one that I've run across.

Re: Tools in my NAF Kennedy cantilever box
I found an exciting upgrade for my NAF set yesterday at a moving sale. I thought that it could possibly provide parts missing for one of my other toolboxes but as I was carrying it to my car I finally noticed the markings. The exterior paint is totally gone but the interior is surprisingly intact. It looks like some kind of silvery grey color over the factory green. I will be forced to paint the exterior before I transfer the NAF tools into it.

Re: Tools in my NAF Kennedy cantilever box
I forgot my readers! Actually, I would likely have noticed the markings earlier but the box was wide open displaying a collection of fine items now mostly residing in my garbage can. There were a very few worthwhile tools inside but mostly rusty imported discards. At another sale earlier in the day I found a dilapidated leather case with an excellent handle.

Re: Tools in my NAF Kennedy cantilever box
I'll bet it has gotten heavier since you said that ...When I get back to the Bay Area in a couple of weeks I will weigh it and report back.
Before I noticed you had already sourced a handle, I was wondering what sort of contemporary US item could have been rigged as a replacement handle when the leather ones gave up, as they surely did, something like a jeep fan belt, or a carbine strap maybe.

Re: Tools in my NAF Kennedy cantilever box
Okay, you shamed me into finally getting it done. The set in its current form weighs in at 73 lbs. By comparison my hybrid GMTK with all the tools from 1938 to 1945 weighs 69 lbs and my MVMTS with all the tools from 1938 to 11/42 weighs 59 lbs. I did some sanding and painting on my new NAF cantilever today. Here's how it came out.

Re: Tools in my NAF Kennedy cantilever box
That looks excellent! Nice work, Don!
Hope you’re using a hand truck to move those heavy boxes around...
Let me know if you come across another vintage leather handle. I need one for an old Snap-On box that I found recently.
