Anyone know what is the correct fire extinguisher for 1941 WC1 Dodge. Would it be Pyrene marked "Heavy Vehicle Type``. What serial number would it have.
Thanks. Charlie

Hi Charlie Yes from my research it would be a Heavy Vehicle Type Pyrene. My 1941 WC12 had the original Pyrene
bracket still mounted. Mike

Most likely an HVT with a single patent (1,688,195) on a brass tag. The second patent was "pending" 1942-1944 so they are fairly easy to date. They will often have a PAT. PEND. embossed on the brass T handle as well. Body on the 40s examples has fewer embossed ridges (more smooth). From what I've seen, decal-type, OD-painted versions didn't come out until the "pending" period.

Do the Letter part of the serial number have anything to do with the dating of the fire extinguisher.

Re: Need correct fire extinguisher for WC1 Dodge
Yes. From what I saw in my limited survey of serial numbers vs. patent references a few years ago (see posts here on the "G"), the higher the letter prefix, the later the production. So a "V" was later than a "T" (which was later than an "S"). I'm sure there are a few things that complicate such an analysis however -- mainly the type of 1 qt FE (HVT vs. regular) and the fact that Pyrene appeared to have multiple manufacturing plants. In the absence of concrete production vs. serial number data the patent references are the best guide in my opinion.
