Fire extinguisher help

Post by TonyStandefer » Fri Jun 30, 2017 4:40 pm

I have a nice wartime fire extinguisher in my mb, the problem I have is that it rattles. That is the internals of the extinguisher rattle when driving, anybody else have this issue? Any suggestions on something to put in it to stop this?

Tony....you probably won't be using it for an engine fire so it is empty, right? I wonder if you can simply fill it with motor oil to stop that noise....you may only need an inch or three in the bottom to stop that noise.

Or you can fill it up with expansive foam.

That's a good idea, I will try it. No I won't be using it, I carry a modern extinguisher-onboard.

Luca, I thought about the foam but that's not reversible is it? I was wondering what others thought

Did you try 30 wt. or 90 wt? It might make a difference....

With all the squeaks, rattles, noises my GPW makes going down the road, I never thought to see if the FE is part of the chorus.

Surely your not thinking of making it back into an extinguisher with Carbon Tet so what difference does the foam make.

Don't want to ruin the value of the item, some may think it is wortg less.

I used 30wt oil, still rattled. I wonder if I could pump it full of grease?

Foam, fine styrofoam "packing peanuts"... If it wasn't a painted example, I'd be removing the cap and gutting it. I've done that numerous times with FE cores for M2 builds that had corroded/broken guts flopping around.

I am not sure it is not reversible. You should try with some foam in a pot, and then try some sort of solvent. If it works, then it the trick I suggested is reversible, but it would take patience. There is no way to fix a rattling extinguisher without unsoldering it. So if one would want to fix it, he would need to unsolder it, and once open the foam could be removed.

Besides, we all know that correct fire extinguishers are there just for show, and not for use.
