What's in Your MVMTS/GMTK? Extra Items
I'm not a mechanic but I suspect that the GMTK assigned to each mechanic had some personalized extra items added to it. Here are the items I have added to my set. Has anyone else added any "extra" items to their set? If so post them here.....and if you haven't added any what are some items you think might have been added by mechanic's to their sets?

Phil,
What brewery is your can/bottle opener from? I used some twine to tie one into the top tray of my box; it's not branded to a brewery, but is stamped WALDEN, INC./Cambridge 38, MA. Also have an aluminum/cadmium finished grabber.

Steve,
Mine is Schlitz. It's old but I don't know much about them or how to date them but it seems every old toolbox I rummage through at the flea market has one or more in it.

Steve,
Here are a couple of ww2 era beer ads that might help anybody who is thinking of adding a bottle opener to their set.

Bill,
I don't know what it's for either but it is a nice addition to your set. Would a mechanic leave their pipe or a pack of cigarettes in their box?

Re: What's in Your MVMTS/GMTK? Extra Items
Nothing too exciting in my box (other than examples of all the tools in all sets from 1938 to 1945!). My key ring has a vintage 4in Dimalloy crescent wrench attached to it. As well as the tyre valve tool and TPG, I've included a vintage set of Allen wrenches and a U.S.A. 1/4" X 5/16" Select Steel mini wrench which I have used frequently on my MB. I couldn't resist adding the U.S.A. Cushman & Denison "Star" oiler that was patented in July 1898. I think they were used to lubricate fire-arms, bicycles and sewing machines.

Re: What's in Your MVMTS/GMTK? Extra Items
Cliff, its always great seeing whats in your set! I really like the 4" adjustable on the key chain. I've had a TPG and a SPW in my set at one time or another but I keep changing my mind on whether to leave it or not.
I suspect a mechanic's pack of cigarettes was always very close by in a front shirt pocket so they would be very hard to borrow but I wonder if at times they did get thrown in the tool box. For those who might be considering adding a pack as an extra here are some images from a '43 issue of Leatherneck.

Houghton and Company huh? That explains how you are able to buy so many estate sale tools!!
I have a few p38 can openers and even had one in my keeper set at one point. I need to add that back. I also have a Zippo lighter that was in mine at one point or another. The Ballantine opener is very cool. Great stuff Don.

Or if you're more of a pipe guy, maybe these will help.

Re: What's in Your MVMTS/GMTK? Extra Items
my thoughts on the pipe in the box. no good pipe guy only has one pipe. I'd put one in the box. That way, the mechanic is always sure to have a pipe close by, even if he forgets his "good" one in the footlocker when he gets that early call to wrench.

Re: What's in Your MVMTS/GMTK? Extra Items
I asked a friend, who is a retired Army mechanic, what "extras" would be reasonable. His response:
"Extra nuts bolts cotter pins, electrical tape if that's period relevant, hose clamps, fuses maybe, I had extra light bulbs for my flashlight" "Oh and I kept a strip of emery cloth for cleaning up points and spark plugs" "Oh and there was always a rag"
All of which is pretty obvious, to me, once he specified it, but I didn't think of it ahead of time.

Luke, I like how you think. I'll add a pipe to my wish list. Steve, that was a great idea. Who better to ask than an Army mechanic.
Not sure if candy bars ever lasted long enough to end up in the tool box but here are some era pictures.
