From the MVMTS to the GMTK...A Visual Evolution

Post by pjones » Wed Jun 07, 2017 5:51 pm

Its hard to get a feel for all the changes that occurred to the Mechanic's set from prior to the war until the end of the war just by looking at the manuals. So I wondered if these changes could be better appreciated by setting a few of these sets side by side starting with a prewar set and finishing with a 1945 based set. After 4 1/2 hours and a throbbing back this is what I came up with. There are definitely a few placeholders but I do believe it serves its purpose.....to show how the mechanics set evolved from prewar to late war. I included at the end a list of the items included in each set and when available which brand I used. I transferred a lot of data so if I made some errors please let me know.

What, you had a few days off and nothing better to do than pull out all your GMTK's and arrange them in chronological order?! (Clearly, the NARA photos have had a bad influence on your subconscious thoughts!)

Seriously, this is awesome, Phil! Great idea - and well-executed. (And a great - as you say visual - complement to the charts on page 2 of the Retrospective thread!) Also, very impressive that you didn't need to reuse any pieces!! :D

I have a very practical question that is very pertinent to the current discussion about the 1/4-inch set data I am compiling and the subject of "DI" seemingly not being able to meet either the 1944 or the 1945 specs. Whereas these do meet the late war specs. How are they marked? Would you mind posting a close-up of a few of them?

That is truly impressive. From the hours of effort I have expended recently working on a 44 set, I can tell that you have put an immense amount of time and searching as well as research into the project. I appreciate what you are doing. This work, and the other research posted by the hand full of noted TK collectors has been a great service to tool collectors.

THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Phil,

Awesome work. Can't thank you enough. This thread will definitely go into my "favorites" folder for handy reference. This will certainly be helpful to anyone collecting the MVMTS through GMTS (aka the GMTK).

Thanks,
Henry

I'm just jealous :D

I suppose there is a reverse question here - do we have, or can we get, an image of the core items that DID NOT change through this period? There has to be a bunch of stuff that didn't change at all - box, putty knife, oiler, etc, etc. It would be nice to get an image of that.

Phil, this is an amazing endeavor, congratulations on the accomplishment! I'm impressed, as I struggle to assemble my first (correct) MVMTS, and try to learn the differences between what's accurate and appropriate and what's not.

I'll echo the sentiment from everyone above me. Great job! This will be a fantastic visual resource going forward. I've added it to the sticky.

Phil,
What a credit this collection is to your dedication to the hobby. It is a tremendous and practical reference resource for us all. Thanks to Jason for adding it to the sticky set for quick access.

Well done. Now what are you going to do with your spare time?

Thanks Guys! I really appreciate your comments and feedback. Makes the sore back ease up a little.

Gordon, you should have asked that yesterday while I had it all laid out! It would have been easier to remove all the items that stayed the same and just leave the ones that changed but I won't be getting these tools back out anytime soon. I actually had thought about approaching it from that angle but ended up deciding to present the sets in their entirety.

Greg, I have been back through the 1945 1/4" socket set. It is all spec correct but to get that I had to use Duro sockets marked D-I and Duro Chrome BUT I also had to use a Bonney 11/32" 6 point and a Craftsman BE 7/16" 6 point. Note the corrections above.

Do the "Duro-Chrome" marked sockets have a model number or not?
