My First Start at a GMTK

Post by 17thAirborne » Sun May 28, 2017 12:32 pm

My first humble beginnings. I'm not sure if everything is correct, but I am beginning to scour the MVTK posts to sort it all out. It seems like it is pretty much explained with pics and lengthy discussions...

I'll echo this sentiment! You've got a good start going.
What brand are you going with for the sockets?
edit: dumb question, looks like you have a complete set of D-I...

What about those dark colored DOE wrenches? What brand are those?

Hi Ozzie. Sounds like you're referring to personal kit threads. Those that include a list are very helpful. Otherwise, it can be difficult to wade through pics and discussions to ascertain the basic contents. For tool identification purposes (once you know the contents), they are indispensable. To find out what tools go in the MVMTS (or GMTS), by type and size, I recommend this thread: viewtopic.php?f=48&t=245615. Just pick a manual and click on the link and you'll see the actual SNL for that version of the kit. Other helpful threads are all listed in the "stickie" we have now. Second from the top.

Good luck and have fun.

Dark colored wrenches are BHM. Here are a few pics. The sockets are D1, but missing just a few.

I took out all of the tools for the GPW and left just the GMTK stuff in there. I am using the GMTS 2 - July 1944 to September 1944 from the link posted in the tool section.

Thanks for the encouragement. and yes, that is the very thread I was going through. For no particular reason, I am using 1 Jul 44 data. Just had to start somewhere, as you said, just pick a manual. As always, I am open to critique to make it a better kit.

That 28s BHM looks to be in cosmolene? Very nice!

If you find a BHM 33C...buy 2 and I'm your huckleberry. I do not think they made one. My 723 came NOS out of England. That's a hard puppy to find. Not only welcome to the GMTS club, but also the BHM owner's association. That's a pretty small group. Get yourself into the Moore 12 guild and you might just be in a 2-member club (me!)

About 10 years ago I had a GPW (looking again). At the time I was trying to put together the vehicle tool kit for it and some kind G503-er sold me that 5-wrench set. He did not have the largest size, so I have these 5 wrenches, all in the same finish, look never used. Frankly I never looked at the markings closely until you asked. I feel fortunate to have them now.

I'll have to learn more about the different brands as time goes by. I'll stand by on the trades, but will be away for 3 days.

Cheers

I think "doing" my homework is the operative word. I have a lot of it to do. This is a very enjoyable forum and I have been having fun reading all the posts. I am beginning to see why there is such enthusiasm in collecting these puppies.

Digging through my stash I came up with this set. The TL-29 is bakelite handle and I might have to upgrade to wood, unless someone thinks this is correct. It is not a pretty thing showing its age.
