2017 Tool Hunting

Post by gpw_42 » Sat Apr 08, 2017 1:17 pm

Figured that I'd start my own thread for this, rather than thread-crashing someone else. This first post is sort of a "catch up," as it has pics from several weeks of hitting the flea/estate sales, and seems that there are some missing pics, as well. Since it's a catch-up thread, I'll only cover in detail the pic from today's flea.

March 17 pic, the yellow spot-painted wrench is not GMTK, the others were already posted to my box thread.

March 26 pic had items bought in 3 states; that was a fun weekend.

Mossberg No. 3 spark plug wrench; 1-1/32" x 29/32" (neither GMTK nor WC-1; will this fill for the 41-W-3335-50 in a jeep tool kit?)
Husky 3/8" drive universal joint (not GMTK, but it was encouraging to see that Husky produced the U-joints, as I search for a 1/2" one for my MVMTS)
Rimac gasket scraper (1939 MVMTS spec, 10 fingers)
Fairmount 731A
Cattaragus 225Q knife (not GMTK)
Vlchek 11" Auto adjustable wrench (WC)
Auto-Specialties 2050 Jack. Correct for an early 3/4T WC, not for my WC-1. I read this thread (viewtopic.php?f=48&t=227345&hilit=G505+jack) on my phone, so went back to buy this jack; handle came with it.

Nice jack score. I'll keep an eye out for a Husky uni joint.

Thursday flea market. Nothing GMTK-related today.

I haven't yet decided whether to restore the M3 or flip it onto the auction site. 3/8" drive Proto DLB which I got excited about, and didn't check the size of the driver. It has a 7/16" edge.

GREAT jack score :P I have about 4 of the smaller Auto Specialty jacks, but keep searching for that one elusive 3/4T WC. Good job!

Does the Vlchek Auto have a Flying V?

It's a guard marked Camillus M3. Doesn't seem to have been apart...yet

Thanks for the comment on the jack. I'm sorta hoping that you've got an AS 2000 hanging around your house, and we can trade down at Florence sometime:) These things are not as heavy as I'd expected, but heavy enough that shipping wouldn't be ideal. Sadly, the Vlchek does not have the flying V, just the V shield.

**Edited to separate the two responses more clearly.

These Vlcheck PR206 6" pliers were the only (possible) WW2 tool I found at 2 fleas over the weekend (the Thursday flea where I found the M3, and a much larger one on Saturday, where these items came from). The diesel for the round trip to the flea cost more than the stuff I bought; just the way it goes sometimes.

The guy who had the jack (and some WW2 era sockets) April 8 was not present this past weekend.

Luke, the book is fascinating, and really all I've read so far is the Foreward. When I've finished going through the book, or at least as much as I want to, I'll mail it to a buddy. His grandfather was a B17 copilot(?) and spent time in one of the other Stalag Lufts. Dave got to be friends with some of his grandfather's crewmen after he (Dave) got into the Army, and his grandfather passed away. *EDIT: the booklet was published in 1984, but I don't see any evidence of an ISBN. Bibliography: Spivey, MajGen Delmar T. POW Odyssey, Recollections of Center Compound Stalag Luft III and the Secret German Peace Mission in World War II. Colonial Lithograph, Attleboro, MA; 1984. Library of Congress Catalog Card No. 84-80886; it's interesting to me that the copyright is to Mrs. Delmar T. Spivey; I haven't figured out if the general died before the book was published, but that's my assumption. He was an O-6 when captured.

I almost forgot to post this catch from the weekend...I think it used a 4" grinding wheel, so kinda doubt that it was a GI piece.

The pics below represent several weeks of searching for tools at local sources, where I've had some success, but not a whole lot (except this one particular estate sale...). Then, I went to the Aberdeen MV event last week, and picked up a "job lot" with a bunch of stuff in it. I've combined all the stuff into one post, and will post some details, as well. Due to the "job lot," there's some stuff in here which is questionable, and some which I know is just plain wrong...and some which is VERY right!

Everything above the remains of the post-war Irwin screwdriver (41-S-1076 stamped on the blade) is incorrect in some way.

723 Wrench details:
Billings 1723 Vitalloy
Bonney Zenel
Vlchek W1214
Barcalo Buffalo
Vlchek 723
Williams <W> 723A SPECIAL
Williams <W> 723

Electrician's Knife Details:
TL-29 Camillus
41-K-370 Pal
It's interesting to note the differences between the knives, when they're side by side. It's hard to tell if the Pal blade was manufactured so much shorter than the Camillus blade, or if it was very well shortened.

The jeep jack will go to a friend's MB; the Dodge 1/2T headlight will go to a different friend. The jeep axle shaft will replace one on my GPW, and the regulator will go into my WC. The machine gun oiler will go in the Armorer's Tool Kit I have on the WAY back burner.

Steve - this could pretty much be the tagline on my weekly finds! Everyone's I would say. :D

CONGRATULATIONS! While there are more in the hands of collectors now than ever before, for awhile there was only one or two, and it's probably still less than fifteen (15) overall by my rough count, and may be even less than ten (10) still.

Both of the knives are great finds, in my opinion. The normally very expensive US ARMY marked has been seen in RA PD images, and the Camillus with the shield was seen in Chad's 1942 tool image. If I had come across those, I would be hanging on to both of them. :D
