Upper echelon items arrived today
I received a couple of orders from the auction site today. The most interesting and rare item was the tire pressure gauge. The only other one that I know of belongs to Hartofoak in the U.K. The FSN is 8-G-650 and it is a bit different from the TPG in the Jeep's on board toolset. The other items are two more D-I spark plug sockets, an 11/16" and a 3/4". I'm now only missing a couple to have a complete set.

Don,
The date stamped on the TPG is too cool. I've not seen a date stamped gauge before. What size DI spark plug sockets do you still need?

Re: Upper echelon items arrived today
Guys,
Thanks for your comments.
Phil, the two D-I sockets I'm missing are the 13/16" (41-W-3325) and the 1-1/8" (41-W-3329) if anybody should happen to run across one or the other.
Henry, the SNL is from July 1945. I am attaching a slightly wider image.

Re: Upper echelon items arrived today
Here are a couple more upper echelon items that I've run across lately. One is a triangular scraper (41-S-760) similar to the one in my Machinists set. I've also found a few punches (41-P-3000) from the Trimmers set and the second echelon set 2.

Nice. I love when them packages arrive! And that site gives my local flea market a pretty good run for the money sometimes.

Re: Upper echelon items arrived today
Hi Don. The chromium plated TPG in the attached thread photo is marked 8-G-650 (EDIT: 8-G-820), but it is not the same as your remarkable and I imagine very rare acquisition. Somewhere on this site is a long discussion about the two types of familiar gauges in relation to the 8-G-650 (EDIT: 8-G-620). Something to do with cold-weather use I recall. This is from my first post many moons ago ...

Re: Upper echelon items arrived today
Cliff,
That post sure does go back a ways. I took a picture of the new gauge next to some of my others. My chrome civilian Schrader gauge most resembles the chrome one in your early post. From top to bottom they are a civilian Schrader, a couple of ORD Schraders, an ORD Druge and the upper echelon Schrader.

Re: Upper echelon items arrived today
Hi Don,
I keep finding those trimmers' set belt punches, too, but they all have 5 punches on the wheel, instead of 6. Pisses me off every time!
Hi Ciff,
The discussion you are remembering concerned a different gauge, namely, 8-G-620, which, like the 8-G-615, was a “general service type” gauge. The 8-G-620 was designed, per the 1949 ORD 7, for “zero weather zones.” This tire pressure gage is physically identical to the 8-G-615 on the outside. Whatever makes it more impervious to cold weather is on the inside. Luckily for collectors (or perhaps unluckily, depending on your point of view), it has the FSN (“8-G-620”) embossed on the neck of the gauge just above the nozzle. That thread, should anyone want to read it, is here: viewtopic.php?f=48&t=146163&start=15&hi ... ision+type
The 8-G-620 tire pressure gauge was introduced sometime between 2 August 1945, which is the last known wartime reference, in ORD 5-3-2, of the 8-G-615, and 15 October 1949, the first known reference, in ORD 7, of 8-G-620. These 8-G-620 gauges look the part, and they are perfect stand-ins, but they are post-war.
Here’s mine:
The 8-G-650 is a bone fide wartime gauge. It was rated the same as the 8-G-615 – 10-60lbs/1lb, 60-160/5lbs. – but it was visibly physically different (as Don’s photos show), and referred to as a “precision type” gauge, as opposed to a “general service type” gauge, in the ORD 6 SNL G-27. Befitting that distinction, it was issued to all upper echelon units. The 8-G-615 was issued (in addition to vehicles for 1st Echelon level driver maintenance) only to the 3rd Echelon tool-set No. 1.

Re: Upper echelon items arrived today
Don, I think I made a mistake in my reply up-post which Greg has thoughtfully corrected. I came across this thread with a 1943 dated example of your TPG:
viewtopic.php?f=48&t=146163#p846889
Like you I've been out to the garage and took a photo of a boxed, chromium plated, Schrader gauge that looks similar to the 8-G-650, was made in GB and which turn up quite often on the auction site. A patent - GB475891 is marked with others on the body and is dated 1938. I believe they were produced in the 1940's & 50's. I've put it alongside my Schrader 8-G-620 together with other U.S. Property TPG's from Schrader, Druse Bros, Syracuse and QMC.

Re: Upper echelon items arrived today
I found another possible upper echelon item last week that appears in the trimmer's set. It had quite a bit of surface rust that mostly came off in the vinegar bath. It turned out to be made by Osborne which is a brand mentioned on the similar punch in the NAF catalog.

Re: Upper echelon items arrived today
Here is a tool that I've been looking for ever since putting together my Machinists set. It's a Starrett No460 41-R-2750 Rule, blacksmiths', steel, folding, length 36", 3 folds. All of the other found examples have been from General. I had an ongoing search on eBay and when one popped up on a buy it now, I did!

Re: Upper echelon items arrived today
I was very surprised to see one pop up. The search had been active for a year and a half. I wasted no time buying it as I didn't want to let it get away. It required a bit of restoration before I took the pictures. Some of the numbers were obscured by an excess of "patina".
