Snap-On 488 Super Service Kit
In this http://g503.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f= ... 9#p1585235 thread I mentioned that I picked up a Snap-On K-55R Tool Chest. Based on Wingnutt's research with the ASO catalog we know that it was available to at least the Navy as stock number R41-T-3491-75. I figured it would make a nice long term project to try and find the pieces that go in it since several of them were already a part of my GMTK http://g503.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f= ... 6#p1583172.
Here's a photo of the tool chest.
This image - from the 1945 catalog on the collecting Snap-On site - shows the items in the set.
I made a spreadsheet to track my progress. If anybody has SO orphans they'd like to part with, let me know.
Thanks for looking.
Bill

Remember, you now have one of these C-2022's for the ignition wrench set!

Really cool project idea! Your GMTK looks great too. Someday I need to start one of those to ride around in my GP. I love the idea of reproducing the old Snap On service kit though.

I didn't forget. I just don't count them until they're in the box.Wingnutt wrote:Remember, you now have one of these C-2022's for the ignition wrench set!

Thanks. I don't think this box will move much once it has a few tools in it. It weighs over 75 lbs. empty!DannyP wrote:Really cool project idea! Your GMTK looks great too. I hope the rest of your sheets are up to date! By pure koinkydink I hit a toolbox with lots of Snap-On in it today and it tapped me out! Check my 'Early Bird' thread later.

Will do. I could use some flea luck by proxy. Pickings have been slim lately!Wingnutt wrote:I hope the rest of your sheets are up to date! By pure koinkydink I hit a toolbox with lots of Snap-On in it today and it tapped me out! Check my 'Early Bird' thread later.

Re: Snap-On 488 Super Service Kit
The items from Wingnutt arrived in the post today along with a GM-70M 1/4" ratchet. (I wonder what determined whether a GM-70L or GM-70M went into the Midget set since they were contemporary functional equivalents.)
I also have this CF-12 on the way.
Will update the spreadsheet for those playing along at home.
Thanks for looking and keep my Snap-On orphanage in mind while you're at the flea.

Re: Snap-On 488 Super Service Kit
You'll get there, Bill. One tool at a time. Or better yet, three of four at a time!
Good question, Bill. The Snap-On midget ratchet situation from 1939 to 1945 is bizarre, and the 1/4 drive ratchet summary in the 'Socket Sets' section of the Collecting Snap-On site does not help. It manages to contradict itself and the catalogs. Snap-On was making the GM-70M 1/4-inch drive ratchet as early as 1939 (see Midget Tools page on Catalog N). Why they even designated a GM-70L (M-70L 9/32-inch drive ratchet with a 1/4-drive plug) is hard for me to understand, unless they were physically different (pawl, number of teeth, etc). If your GM-70M is date coded 2, 3, E, or G, I wouldn't worry about it. I know they label the ratchet in the TM-130 set figure in Catalog Q as a GM-70L, but they show the GM-70M on the next page when they list and show all the separate pieces.mrbill wrote:I wonder what determined whether a GM-70L or GM-70M went into the Midget set since they were contemporary functional equivalents.

Bill, I think I can help you with your 1/4 sockets and the ignition wrenches.

This is what I have available from my spares collection. They must be going to a good home.
The 1/4 sockets are all E code and I have a spare 1/4 socket case. The ferret sockets are 41, 42 & 45. The BP ignition wrenches have no date code. If you are really nice I may sell you the 17/32 ferret socket (not many of those around), its a G code.

Re: Snap-On 488 Super Service Kit
With the help of Tin Medic and d42jeep I have taken a big step forward on the 1/4" socket set. I was able to pick up the two remaining sockets I needed and have a 6" extension on the way. Just need the breaker bar (nut spinner - at 1/4" you can hardly call it a breaker bar) and 2" extension now.
Was also able to pick up a 4 oz. ball pein hammer with a cracked handle. I tried mudbox's approach in this post viewtopic.php?f=48&t=265506 using 18 gauge safety wire I had on hand. It didn't turn out nearly as well as mudbox's hammer but it is solid and stable. I may give it another shot if I can find a smaller gauge wire.
Thanks for looking.
