Re: 1939 Fed Specs: Putty Knife (41-K-546)
Ok so at first I wasn't going to get drawn into the minutia of putty knives for my GMTK. Or I wasn't until I looked down today and noticed this Red Devil that I've been using. It is of course a 3" blade and not to spec. But I thought for type study discussion it might be useful. Marked P1-3F with a single large rivet and TWO pins near the end of the handle. Also marked Irvington, NJ. Does this mean I should put it down and buy a newer knife to actually use?? This might be why I'm not a very good tool collector, but a pretty effective tool user.

I believe at least one (1) of the other upper echelon tool-sets - most likely the painters', maybe sheet metal, too, took one with the wider blade. I'd have to check it later.

Here's an image of the Painter's Tool Set showing the wider knife 41-K-417.
I've added the various RAPD images of 41-K-546 that I posted previously.

Re: 1939 Fed Specs: Putty Knife (41-K-546)
Interesting. Not sure if I should read too much into it or not, but in that image knife "L" 41-K-417 looks to have the single large rivet and two smaller pins same as my example. It's a curious manufacturing thing to me to have the different configuration on the handle for a wider knife then a narrower one, when it's the same handle, same manufacturer...
Thank you

Re: 1939 Fed Specs: Putty Knife (41-K-546)
I googled Pioneer Tool and came up with this. Maybe Red Devil Made it under contract for them?
“Founded in 1948 by George Gundersdorf and Richard Upson in Springfield, MA, Pioneer Tool is a distributor of metal-cutting tools to New England-based manufacturers. In addition to providing customers with new tools, Pioneer Tool has an on-site regrind facility that also has special tooling capabilities. In 1969, the Company moved to W. Springfield, MA, and expanded the building to 8,000sq.ft. comprised of the office, the warehouse, and the regrind facility. In 2012, Pioneer Tool relocated its corporate headquarters and regrind facility to a new, approximately 16,000sq.ft. building located in Agawam, MA.”

I checked 1939, 1951 and 1965 catalogs. No P11. I have no idea.

Hi All
Don,
Thank you for checking the catalogs.I do appreciate it, I was looking at the wartime suppliers list that Greg posted, list C mentions Pioneer on it not sure If it is a different company or not than the one you found. The font on the pioneer marked putty knife is very small compared to my other one's it also has Trade Mark stamped on it above the Red Devil which none of the others that I have are marked like that. The font is so small it took several pictures to capture it so it was legible without the glare from the flash.
Thanks Again
Dave

Dave,
There they are, all right. Sorry I missed them. Good spotting. Very similar to the P1 series but apparently a lower priced item.

Hi All
Don,
Hey my friend nothing to be sorry about. It took me a couple of passes to spot it myself, from what I read some of the putty knives series are similar in construction with a different number due to the end of the handles ranging from oval ,wide oval, full oval on the ends. They also mention rivets some as steel pins, brass pins and the big rivets as compression saw rivets. Interesting catalog, Thanks for the lead
